ALPINE RAILROAD IN NJ-EVOLUTION IN PICS PART VII

When I last posted I had just completed adding rocks to the newest section of my layout. I flew to CA for vacation on 12/27 and am still here now in LA on business until Feb. Of course that means I don't get to work on the layout but before I left I took a few more photos to share after I had colored all the remaining white plaster with Woodland Scenics earth pigment. It really makes a huge difference. Even without grass or trees the layout starts to look more realistic.

Dry lake beds

Nevada consists of a large number of mountain ranges with valleys in between.  Often these valleys have no drainage and during the rainy season water will accumulate into a lake (yes, it does occasionally rain in Nevada).  When it warms up the water evaporates and it turns into a dry lake.  Nevada has them all over.  Railroads sometimes crossed dry lake beds with occasional loss of roadbed and equipment when it rained heavily.  I really wanted to depict a dry lake bed and accidentally discovered a technique for modeling one.

New Static Grass Applicator Improvement ?

I have noticed that there is now a USB charged fly swatter. Has anyone yet tried to convert this as a static grass applicator ? My experience with the old fly swatter conversions were less than stellar, They worked, but not as good as the Noch. I like the idea of it being USB charged ( no more batteries ) and it could be always ready to go...but to what extent ? I am willing to give the fly swatter one more chance and build one more...but was hoping someone has beat me to it.

Ethernet 101

A recent question on using video cameras in staging has prompted the start of this thread.

The aim is to educate and inform readers on how the installation of a Local Area Network (LAN) can enhance and simplify our enjoyment of this hobby.

Wiring a Walthers ACM turntable control board to a Relay 8 module? Help?

Has anyone succeeded in connecting the Walther's Advanced Control Module to a Relay 8 (5v.) board?  I could sure use some help as to what the wiring diagram should be.

I've done a lot of Googling for information and about all I find are other individuals who are equally frustrated, but no answers.

I'm going to use it to turn the track power on/off for each stall.  It is supposed to do that automatically by activating a relay when the turntable is programed to go to a specific stall.

Athearn Blue box frame

When I bought this about two years ago it was an abortion, a Bachmann BQ23-7 shell on this frame #38018. Any ideas as to which Athearn shell is supposed to be on this frame number? It doesn't match any of the other frames I have. Divided fuel tank, high mounted brake cylinders, Air tanks in front of fuel tanks, just below front fly wheel.

Scales out at 58' long. coupler mount to coupler mount.

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Scratch building wooden platform Bolton Uk early 1900s

Hi! I have been working on a scratch built platform in wood over the last weeks. The prototype is Bolton Uk beginning of 1900. I fell i love and had to build one. Video tutorial (how-to) video will be published January 19th. Here's a few photos:

LoSiund ESU 50310 and Digitrax PM42

Has anyone setup a new ESU 50310 with a Digitrax PM42?

Or know if this arrangement works? Or if not is there a power management device that does and does not interfere with its operation and rail cm?

Just got the ESU unit and want to implement but also want to keep the short protection.

Haven't received any confirmation from LokSound so far so hoping someone can chime in.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

1939 Railway Maintenance Cyclopedia Excerpt: Standard Lengths of Rails

A couple of weeks, I posted a topic on Railway Engineering and Maintenance Cyclopedias (http://model-railroad-hobbyist.com/node/32050). I really enjoy the once-contemporary detail contained in these and decided others might as well, so I've transcribed a couple of paragraphs from the chapter on rail.
