A couple of videos from 2002 UP Challenger & Circus Train Runby

For my first blog entry, thought I would share two of my videos that I took on 8mm videotape back in 2002. Some of you have probably seen these on another forum.

Had this on 8mm video tape for years (obviously) from July 6, 2002. Recent messages here got me interested in digitizing it and here it is! And, yes, that is me taking pictures at trackside (still haven't digitized them, they are 35mm film). Taken in Mt. Prospect, IL (just north of OHare Airport.

Auto Distribution Facility

Thought I would show a few pictures of my Auto Distribution Facility.  The unloading ramps, trailers and buildings are from the Walthers Distribution Facility kit.  I ordered the cars off of ebay.  They are 1:100 scale, but fit the trailers nicely and give the facility a larger appearance.  The fencing is scratchbuilt using ceiling tile hanger wire, thule and thread to simulate the barbed wire at the top.

You can find more info on my web page:

Fleischmann Profi-Track Turnouts

Has anyone had experience with Fleischmann Profi-track turnouts?

I have quite a number of them that I acquired sometime ago, and I plan on using them along with a good number of Peco turnouts on my new layout. They appear to be quite well made.

Just wondering if anyone cares to elaborate on their experiences using them??

What is the truth about Peco code 100 "large" turnout number equivelent?

Apparently the truth is a bit fuzzy on the Peco code 75 and 100 turnouts.  According to a PDF turnout information document, actually all three - small, medium and large Peco turnouts, in the above code rail types - have 12 degree frogs.  That seems odd because small, medium and large Peco code 100 turnouts seem to have varying sharpness of turnout curve radius's.  Here is the link to the PDF I am referring to:

Building a Layout When You're Renting

Hello all!

As I do a little pencil chewing on my next model railroad (military career, new duty station means a new home and a new layout), I thought I'd get a few thoughts from y'all on building a layout in a rented space, either house, condo, or apartment.  I'm particularly drawn to shelf-style layouts, as opposed to island-style.  Any perspective on challenges or design tips?

Search for decal

I haven't been able to find a small white tilted HO scale leaf for my CNR wood caboose like this:

For some reason Microscale's is oversized and so is S. Arthur's.

For now I'm using this C-D-S dry transfer, which is the right size, but it doesn't have the leaf's veins, as seen above in the B&W photo. So for now, I'll only use it as a stand-in and won't seal it.

Fast Tracks Turnout gaps

I am about to embark on a 20 turnout building spree. Rail arrived today! Fast Tracks suggests using a Jeweler's saw with a fine tooth blade to make gaps for frogs. I am wondering if this is the best way? Have others used this or what have they used? It isn't an expensive tool but if I don't have to buy one I won't. Although I love an excuse to buy another tool. lol

Another track cleaning post -- can you ever get it clean?

After a few months of not running my trains as I worked on scenery my track has gotten very dirty.  Yesterday I spent a lot of time cleaning it.  I used a brightboy, then metal polish, then alcohol and finally Act 6006 track cleaner. No matter what I did I could never seem to get a clean rag when I wiped the track at the end.  I took one 18 inch segment and spent 15 minutes on it and still never go a clean rag when I wiped the track for the last time.  Is my experience typical or am I missing something in my cleaning?

Displaying Railroad Lanterns and Memorabilia

I would guess that a lot of modelers here have railroad memorabilia. Is there a place or way that you like to display your items at home. I am talking lanterns in particular but photos of any of your displays would be appreciated. I have a lot of documents, a lantern, and a telegraph key/sounder; all family heirlooms not on display and stored.

P2K EMD BL-2 (has this happened to you?)

This is just... odd. Has anyone ever had an engine just... simply... quit?
