MRH

Unfortunately due to pandemic resource limitations we can no longer afford to keep the MRH App maintained, so reluctantly, it is being discontinued as of May 2020. The April 2020 issue is the last issue and come June 15, the App and hub will completely end and will no longer be usable.

Have you tried the new MRH App for the iPad/iPhone or Android devices? The new-and-improved version is now available!

Also for PCs, Macs, and Linux using a web browser, our MRH hub works like the app:

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you previously installed the MRH app, please uninstall the old version and reinstall the new version to completely refresh the cache. The prior version had some issues with displaying the magazine pages clearly. Deleting the old app and installing the new app will correct the display problem.

What is the MRH app, what does it do and why do I want it?

I'm with Dave

What are the benefits of the app? Not the features and buzzers and whistles; rather, how will using the app benefit me?

One stop shop for everything MRH

The app is a one-stop-shop for everything MRH. All the issues going back to 2014 are at your fingertips on your mobile device. Also, you get a very visual version of recent posts on our forum, what's new on our Facebook page, what's new on TrainMasters TV, and what's new on our YouTube page. The presentation is very visual - and because of that you will get a completely different take on this forum's recent posts list, for example. You will see posts that look very interesting to you because of the visual sample of what's in the thread instead of just seeing an often cryptic title. Try the PC / Mac / Linux web link for a sample and click down the icons on the left for the various views.

Download is easy

I've been playing with the app on my phone and tablet. Normally I would download issues with Goodreader, and keep the most recent one or two.

Downloading via the app seems to be a bit smoother. Just tap the download button then "open in..."  The last couple of months I've opened in Evernote and it syncs a copy to all my devices.  Dropbox would likely work as well, but I haven't tried it.

If downloading via the app continues to work well it'll likely be my new "normal." There's a lot to be said for the path of least resistance.

I have it on my iPad and my iPad mini.

Does everything I need it to do, and the price was right.

Thanks for providing this.

question for you Joe.......

Uh,  I'm an electronics dumb dumb........I deleted the old app, got that figured out, clicked on the app for android and it took me to a screen for google play that wants a bunch of personal info that I'm not really willing to give out!

Is that right? Just wanted to read the mag, not sign up for a car loan...I'm using an LG tablet from US CELL.........and to tell you the truth, I don't even remember how I got the old app on here.......thanks for your time........

Never heard of that

That's not us - you're stuck in the bowels of whatever LG and US Cell have as a front-end to Google Play. Ordinarily, you select the app and it downloads - but you DO have to log into Google Play.

If you're not logged into Google Play, it may ask you to log in and if your login fails may start to hit you with security questions about who you are to make sure it's really you.

If THAT'S what is going on, then you will need to talk to LG / US CELL, since you're not even to downloading our app yet. That's Google Play stuff ...

Glitch?

The app is pretty neat and has a nice layout and feel to it. But the "visual" component is lost in at least one section--perhaps due to a glitch?

I'm using an iPad4 and just updated the app.  When clicking on the Facebook icon, you can see that only 6 of the 12 entries display an image:

image.png

One of the examples above doesn't show an image because it's a text only FB entry, but the other 5 have a featured image if you follow the link to the FB page.

Facebook and images...

Facebook is problematic with images. Looking at the selection above, I can pretty much bet that the ones with images are the ones that Facebook managed to pick up automatically from the link, and the ones without them are the ones where I had to download one of the photos and then upload it to Facebook as an image for the link.

Works fine

For me.  I tried it on my mini IPad.  Looked at the forum and the magazine.  Everything seemed ok.  It dropped off a couple of times trying to read the mag.  It also went to a couple of sponsor sites when trying to change pages.  Probably my fault, need to be careful where I swipe.

The forum organization seemed to be pretty limited.  All I found were posts, appeared to be by time.  Again, the filter may be there, I just didn't find it.  Experience will tell if I use it much.  I tend to use Safari with a number of tabs.  Many subjects are active simultaneously. I just change page by clicking a tab.  I know it is old school, but I find having multiple apps open lead to memory/speed problems.

I generally like the apps presentation quality.

So many trains, so little time,

Larry

Android issues

This feels like an iPad app that has been pushed to android with no consideration of integrating with the Android interface, e.g. the back button does nothing, except exit out of the settings page, on the home screen is should exit the app, standard android programming practice. May prompt are you sure you want to exit, but it still should allow you to exit and shutdown the app, not just return to your tablet home screen.

I am forced to only view in mode I started the app in, i.e. if I start in portrait I stay there, although some times it tries to switch orientation and crashes.

Crashes every time when I wake the tablet from sleep.

I have reported these problems through google play as well.

In portrait mode I have to swipe to see the youtube icon on the home screen, yet there is plenty of space on the screen to get all five icons. The gaps between the four icons shown look big enough for two more icons

If I select an area (e.g. MRH forums) why would I want to be able to scroll up and down to see the other areas? Especially when the menu is always showing on the side. If I go to a particular area scrolling up/down I would like to see more entries from that area, not tap on show more entries for another 6.  The items per screen could easily be doubled, maybe not for the magazines, it may need to be customizable to suit the user.

Web forums I have no idea how it picks what to display they certainly are not displayed the same as the webpage. Also I have no way to select ones I want to view, either by topic or ones I have posted too.

Settings page should have the version information, or a separate about page as I shouldn't have to go into my device settings to determine what version of the app I am using.  Just tried changing the settings and I can't change anything.

And what content is loading when I go to the home screen? I would expect that operation (returning home) to be the quickest, I wouldn't expect to load anything till I select and area to view.

Youtube doesn't have dates under the entries, everything else does, not sure they are needed at all, but would expect it to be consistent for all.

Okay, it's back

Okay, the app is back. Apple failed to autorenew our contract, so we had to manually renew it. In short, they wanted money or they would no longer display our app ...

Joe, I recently downloaded

Joe, I recently downloaded the Android app, and I'm not impressed. I can't figure or see a way to login to post to the forums from the app. Yes, it lists the most recent posts, but unless I check it regularly I don't feel like I really see all of the most recent posts. If I would add anything it would be the ability to login and make forum posts. I would rate the app 6 out of 10. For now I'll keep it on my phone, but I will still rely on my recent threads bookmark to check the forums. Craig

Ok..now what

Ok..thats why I could not find it at first using search in iTunes.   Got it to download, now I have the dreaded "Waiting...." shown for the MRH icon display on my iPad.  Tried re-booting, nothing.

Be patient

As for the waiting ... message, we have found you just need to be patient ... it does come up eventually. The app seems to be getting pretty popular, so it may be time to pay for bigger servers. Buy more MRH Store goodies and more TrainMasters TV memberships ... that's how we help grow our support for the free stuff when ad revenue is flat.

See fixed issue with Pages

After having to reset my Android tablet and re-downloading the app the pages are clearer.  My only thing is if you go to a different app and then come back to the MRH app it doesn't seem to remember where you left off.  Would be nice if it could do that.

On a side note I also download the PDF just in case I don't have my tablet and want to read it on my PC.  I get the best of both worlds.

I will wait awhile..

before downloading the apps.  I have an Apple air ipad and a S7 Edge Samsung phone.  I need both apps and I don't want to put up with the time wasting BS that some people are having.

The way I access MRH on both the ipad and the phone is with the Google app or the Firefox Focus app.  Both apps work well on both devices.  You get the web version of MRH.

To be honest, I schedule my time so that when I look at MRH, I am on my newish laptop, Win 10, 64 with big bright screen at 133%, and good big sound system with equalization.

It's now up and running on my iPad.   When viewing the forums, no photos posted show.  Also no way to login.

No luck on android

I have the MRH app on my tablet, and while it's possible to read the magazine, it is not possible to use the forum, if the forum is pulled up on the app, only the original post will show up and none of the responses, nor is it possible to respond to forum posts on the app, it has to be done on the full website. Equipment being used is a brand new Samsung Galaxy tab E, with the android operating system.
