Switching layout questions (more runaround discussion)

New to the site here, but have been lurking for a while.  I have a track plan for a switching layout I have been kicking around for a while for the office in my home.  My goal is to model what would be a (fictitious) midwest shortline or a Conrail industrial track circa late 90's.  One of my givens was to have an interchange where I could drop cars off on one track and then pick up the days work and pre-block the train before performing switching duties.  After that I would hit the industries and head for the "rest of the line" in staging.

Engine terminal as a theme for a shelf layout – Good or bad idea?

I have an opportunity to build an 18 x 2 shelf layout.  I have a wonderful collection of modern UP power which I would love to use rather than sit in boxes or on a display shelf.

I was considering modeling a locomotive terminal as the primary theme for the layout instead of a switching layout.  I would have a schedule of IB and OB trains, but rather than model the whole train, I would only interact with the locomotives (i.e hostler duties).

GWMS Model Railroad Club

Hi I am sure most of you have seen my past posts on the Model Railroad Club and had a suggestion to combine them all into one so this is where I will move all past posts and future ones so they can be easily found. If anyone has any other suggestions feel free to post them in the comments or PM me thanks again to all of you people who have helped and are following my posts.

My multi-level mushroom layout design

I'm doing a mushroom design - the details of that design follow in the first post below.

Also, this opening post has some additional attachments relating to the design.

Moderator note: Due to the way this site repeats the first post on all pages of the thread, it's not a good idea to have really long opening posts. Ideally, you do a short initial post and then put all the long-winded details in the first comment on the thread. We moved your details to the first comment post per best practices as just described.

Speaking of mushroom designs

Time to debunk some misconceptions about mushroom design.

Read on, and let's talk about how to do a mushroom benchwork design well.

Shadow Box Effect with Wall Paint

This question is just for fun, but I wonder if anyone has tried creating a 'close to' shadow box effect by painting their layout room walls and ceiling black, while maintaining a colored backdrop, instead of creating a black valance? A compromise instead of installing custom lighting and a valance if the layout is going to be moved every 2 or 3 years.

Feedback on yard design needed

I need feedback on this yard design (scalable PDF version: http://www.academyvideos.com/CT River Valley Model RR/images/springfieldyard2fig23.pdf ) from an operational perspective.
Thanks
Alan
