Dream and design

Book Recommendations

I would like to get a book for my brother for Christmas.  In the past he is prone to:

Dream Layout.

Hey guys. I am working on designing my dream home, and my dream layout at the same time. I'm conflicted on many aspects of the design and what all I want on the layout. The room is a little over 8000 Sq Ft. Yes I know, it's very large. It is going to be in the basement of the house. I want to incorporate a lot of different of scenes, industries and other things. My plan is to have two decks that are connected with no helixes. The bottom deck will be at 30" and the top deck at 60". A few other things.

Fictional NYSW-esque railroad in Pennsylvania

I've been thinking about the NYS&W lately and I think that "format" of railroad is cool, and wondered how it would look transplanted to Pennsylvania. Basically, the NYS&W was a moderately-successful bridge line that eventually shrank back before acquiring new trackage in an area it did not originally operate it. My idea starts with the New York, Philadelphia, and Norfolk Railroad, which had a line roughly running up the Delmarva peninsula.

Small traction module

I've been thinking about model railroading again, and this time I think a traction layout would be interesting. I want to keep it small, and I want to make it compatible with East Penn Traction Club modules. Going to a convention with it would be a good long-term goal to work towards. I'm not particularly interested in modelling one prototype, or even freelancing a US railroad, rather, I have mine set in the setting of some stories I've written, although this particular module would take inspiration from one SEPTA trolley depot I've seen.

Layout Lighting

I’m planning for my new layout after moving to Texas.  The construction of the building is to start next week.  I have a rough track plan but had not decided on how best to light the layout.  My previous layout had incandescent, then CFL, and finally LED bulbs every 30” behind a valance.  I decided not to put in a valence because construction is time consuming and I’m 75.

? Track Planning for Realistic Ops - Any .pdf or e-book copies anywhere for purchase?

I am looking for some electronic version (.pdf e-book etc.) of Track Planning for Realistic Operations.  No go on Amazon. Books-a-Million, Kalmbach etc.  A web search turned up an "e-book company" but this was a scam.  If you enter a title it says it's available and sends you to a website that requires a CC# to "look" then says there is no such book then sends you to another site (again asking for a CC# to look) this is where that nonsense stopped.

Need software suggestion for photo editing.

I have seen over the years here on the forum some neat edited images of layout scenes.

I have a newer iMac and was wondering if anyone out there is using one with photo editing software,

A fellow forum member did this for me, and I'l like to do things like this and also create backgrounds.

New On30 Layout

After 33 years of building and operating my HO Northern Pacific Layout, I felt a need to start over in On30 because I love to build models.  I found that with all the Ready to Run and pre-built stuff for HO and the lack of kits, there is compared to when I started in HO in 1988, that HO was simply not holding my attention anymore.

Articles Similar to the MR's Tar Branch Jan-April 2018

All:

I really liked the Tar Branch series because it closely followed the prototype and included plenty of photos of the 1950's era actual trackage and businesses served.  And it was very compact.  While there are tons of imagined small switching track plans, so many, to me at least, loose the flavor of the real thing.

I'm a little bit stumped on how to track down published articles of similar actual small town switching with plenty of photos like the Tar Branch series.

Spaghetti Bowl Layouts/Trackplans

In the past I have taken a fair bit of criticism about my latest layout construction being a classic 'spaghetti bowl' plan. Yesterday I was over at a train show near Deland FL, and i revisited the local club located there in one of the fairground's building.  My thoughts were that it might also be described as a spaghetti bowl design. One of the older lady members told me that other folks had expressed the same thoughts,...but that was no problem for other members of the club.
