Dream and design

Connecticut Northern design

Here's what I've got for my design of the Connecticut Northern, a freelanced modern industrial switching layout located in a fictional industrial park with industries typical of the Northeastern United States. The concept is that it's going to be part of a larger layout with some modules, a yard, and some other sections.

I was inspired by this design, and decided to adapt it to my industries.

House with strange addition for a large layout

A bit odd, but definite possibilities...This modest in Vermont has a 28 x 40 ft wing that used to be a jail, unused since 1969. Seems to me a perfect space for a dream layout - take it out to the studs and start installing subroadbed

First Design - Feedback Required

Hey All,

It is 2021 and I have officially found a home and place to build my layout. I had posted before about putting it in a new addition to our home but for a number of reasons, it was not going to be practical to do so. I have decided to build a modular layout in my office that I can put together when operating, and storing 2 of the 3 sections away when it is not in use.

Designing the New P&A Yard In South Erie, PA

OK,

Time to get down to redrawing the South Erie Yard, version 3.0.  Here are the following "givens"

- The P&A will receive Cars from 2-3 trains every Shift from the NYCS from their yard in Erie, PA (staging)

- The P&A will send cars in 2-3 trains every shift to the NYCS yard in Erie, PA (staging)

- The P&A  NKP interchange will be done by a Yard Crew at the Interchange Track at Fairview, Jct (Interchange Track modeled, Junction will not be)

What lines in PA would make a good model RR?

As a native Pennsylvanian I’m fortunate to have some pretty important lines pass through the state.  While I’m not planning on modeling a mainline, I think about them from a model railroading standpoint.  Unfortunately, I generally come up empty handed in thinking how they can translate to an interesting to operate model railroad.  The PRR mainline across the state is multi-tracked, lacks online industry for a large portion and isn’t overly attractive, scenically speaking.

At what point does it become ridiculous to have multiple paths through a yard?

Designing the South Erie Yard is proving to be a nightmare!

Ground Throws, Crossovers and usual Prototype Practices

OK,

Most likely a foolish question, as I suspect what the answer is, but I might as well ask anyways.

For crossovers, where either the turnouts are in the "Crossover" Route, or in the "Straight" Route, both turnout points need to move to be aligned properly.  Was there ever situations or reasons why the two turnouts would be mechanically connected by one ground throw?  And I'm speaking about manual ground throws, no machines involved in throwing the turnout points.

Using Full-Sized Prototype Radius curves?

I've been interested in designing a layout that uses full-scale, prototype-sized curves without resorting to any 'selective compression'.   For N scale this works out to 43" radius curves (1150 scale feet in diameter) to represent a 10-degree curve on the prototype.  My thought is that it would better represent the 'flow' of a real train as it negotiates such a curve, and that replicating such movement is a subliminal way to enhance overall realism.  The other benefit is that it should make it easier to run longer trains with fewer issu

HELP - Need to find a prototype solution to a Model RR created problem

I don't see a plausible solution without totally redesigning this portion of the Layout for (what seems like) the millionth time.  I have had to move the location of this yard on the layout at least ten times, and each time, I have had to reconfigure where the basic "elements" to.

The problem arises as those elements are the Freight Yard (which isn't an issue in this thread), a WYE, Engine Service Facility, a mainline representing the connection to the NYC, and a small passenger train service facility.

Track plans

Greetings ,i am getting  into building a small n scale layout  .what i am trying to build will be a 16" x 14" set up for inside a display cabinet.i would like to incorporate  a switch or two but dont think that will happen.my question is can i do something other than a circle layout?

Is there a smaller radius curve track  that might work ? Flex track?i have a small yard steam loco and think that will make the tighter turns but am not sure about rolling stock.any advice is appreciated.thank you.
