Looking for input/critique: N scale rail-served glass factory switching layout

Hi everyone,

Long-time lurker/MRH reader, first-time poster. I'm a UK modeler who does '50s American stuff because he prefers the aesthetics.

Cat Proofing your train room / Mattie in her Perch.

Prior to building my train room Mattie (our Cat) had decided a shelf at a particular window was her favorite look-out. As well, the morning sun shone in the window, and Cats being what Cats are she figured life just didn't get much better. (Mattie is an "indoor" Cat. She never goes outside unless she is on her leash)

Ogden & Cache Valley RR - Layout Construction

It's been 10+ years in the making, but last month we finally broke ground on my detached garage/workshop.  The overall dimensions of the building are 68'x42'.  There will be a 10x14 ft 'model workshop' and a 28x32 ft layout room.  I've been working on the layout design for about 4 or 5 years.  According to our GC the detached garage/workshop should be done by the end of the year.

Here is the floorplan and the layout overlay on the train room:

Let's do the time warp again

So I have been wanting to build a roundy-round set in the early 1950’s so I can run my Bachmann 2-8-0. My fiend Joe D’Amato really planted the seed when he gave me a Micro-Trains engine house. This engine house has many components that look and feel like John Allan’s Gorre and Dephetid engine house, except that it is open on one side and is a single stall. Joe and I have agreed to build a pair of 2×4ish layouts using the same basic track plan, but with different eras and locations.

A new Tonopah and Tidewater RR design for your consideration

Here is my new design for my Tonopah and Tidewater RR.  The old model railroad had to be moved from a 15X15 room in Reno to a 3rd car garage in Las Vegas and it couldn't moved intact.  Only the left side and the top with bridge is intact. The new design is influenced by Trevor Marshall and others who advocate simpler switching layout designs.  So the new version depicts a small section of the railroad in Goldfield rather than 30 miles depicted in 25 feet.  If you have not been in Nevada imagine desert scenery with mine hoist and mills everywhere.

How common are crossovers on industry sidings?

I see the following schematic quite often in layout plans and was curious as to how common they really are in real life? I've never seen one personally. I'm sure they exist.

Although the following is harder to switch, I tend to see these more, especially if the track has been around longer than 30 years.

HP entering the 3D market link has a video.

Found this article today.  Just sharing;

However, note it states it may be after 2016 before we see one from HP.

Inspiration for a Quarry Railroad

Hi everyone: I found this Vulcan Quarry about five miles west of Kankakee, Illinois. I thought it might be some cool inspiration for an industry on your layous.

At a crossroad

I currently have a fully functional N Scale switching layout that needs scenery and buildings. It is working great but I don't seem to be switching trains as much as I thought that I would be. It seems like each time I operate the layout, I complete the exact same moves.

Heart of Georgia as a point to point

I may have asked this before, but I am considering the heart of Georgia for my layout, with a small change.
