Dream and design
Prototype track plan design.
Just wanting to hear peoples thoughts on this:
When designing a new track plan, based on a prototype subdivision.
Do you compression the railroads track plan, or just design key features of that said subdivision to invoke the flavor, setting your trying to model?

Help: Adding a switch for better business access
I'm attempting to rework a siding to a feed mill. It's based on a real business and the siding is pre-WWII. Everything is now gone. The railroad has fast forwarded to the 1980s on my layout.
At the top of the schematic, the siding eventually rejoins the main.
Flow of cars: A trackmobile pulls cars through the mill heading to the bottom. Then shoves loads towards the top on the load track. This is typically a car at a time.

Is CAD (computer aided design) a good thing?
I saw the suggestion that CAD had to be used on another thread. I have some feelings about the use of CAD for layout design, but rather than hijack the other thread I started another.

Proposed Track Plan Insight welcome
Here is my proposed track plan for my shelf layout. I am open to any ideas, suggestions, or any issues I might not be seeing. I am going to have staging cassettes for the top left and at the interchange at the bottom. Eventually when this gets finished I can expand on the left side with another 4' x 9' shelf with a 4 foot cassette to connect the 2 shelfs across the sliding door.

Track Planning Software for the Mac
Hey MRH, it's been a while.
Good news/bad news in my household. Bad news: the original Greenpoint Dock & Transfer Company is no more. The Good News: I'm going to have a fully finished basement and dedicated layout room to house a new layout.
A question: does anyone have any experience with track planning software for the Mac? Any experiences you can share would be appreciated.
Thanks
multiple layouts or one giant one? How do you decide?
I have a large barn (two stories). I am re-entering the hobby after 30+ years. I have always wanted to have a grand layout, now I have the space. There are many ideas bouncing around, mostly inspired by the amazing layouts I see here and on TMTV. I have 30 acres of timber on this farm I recently purchased ranging from pines, cedars and spruce to black walnut, maple & oak. Material is not really an issue either. So when you find yourself in possession of most everything you need to make your big layout a reality, how do actually plan this out?

Help on design
Hi all.
Now that I am back from a 15 day vacation break, I had time to think about where I am going with my hobby.
I need to step back, and think what are my tastes.. I mean, I love french trains, but the US diesels are always on my mind.. so, I'm going to make so changes to the layout I am building at the moment.
I want a small shunting shelf layout, something like the Bristish usually do.
I don't have a lot of space, but I think I can manage 250 x 40 cm, with no problem at all.
