Dream and design
So.... O over HO or vice versa?
A question of height.
A little background.
Currently I have a good size HO modern era collection and some modern era 2 rail O scale. In the not so distant future, I will be able to expand my layout from a 9' X 11' room in an apartment to a good size space (19' X 16') in a basement.

Looking for larger version of an old version Atlas Switch Machine
I am rethinking the entrance to the basement. Particularly the door. The only feasible trackplan requires the mainline on all the decks cross in front of the stoop at the bottom of the stairs. I have been going through several different solutions to prevent the door from being opened while there is a train on the track, or about to cross the threshold of the door and end up on the floor!

A handy pdf to make your layout more realistic

I found this pdf and I thought it could be useful for us modelers
Design challenge
Hi, would like suggestions for designing a HO layout in a 16' by 10' room.
I'm a big fan of the late John Allen and his Gorre & Dapheted.
Real life prototypes Great Northern is my favorite.
Thus the layout is intended to depict a bridge route between the two
going from Andrews on the G&D north to a connection with the GN.

Need assistance researching how Coal Classification Yards function?
A part of my layout will have a coal branch, with a coal classification yard to gather all the coal in the hoppers from the various coal mine branches. I am trying to find information SPECIFICALLY on how the yards were run circa 1950s. NOT MODERN! I need information specifically for the early to mid 1950s.

Super Saw (an idea based on a store clerk's lack of knowledge)
The frustrating part of my day...
Earlier this evening I called a local, (Canadian) national, hardware store with with what I thought was very a simple question. "Could you, please, check the X-acto cabinet for me and tell me if you have any #215 saw blades."
Your experiences with 24 and 36 inch radius helixes in HO
Hello everybody,
I require some input from members regarding the length of trains that they operate on a helix that has a radius of 24 inches. It would be good to know how long of a train and the type of equipment used to pull it. Here is the reason why:

Your thoughts on building this layout?
I think it's time I started building a new layout, and this is what I have in mind:
I'll describe it in more detail below. I would like to hear any comments on building, operation, etc.
Making the past come to life
Back in 1957 there was a proposal to build a bridge between Long Island (Oyster Bay) and Westchester County, NY (Rye). It was to be a vehicular bridge. For various reasons - money, politics, etc., it never came to pass. But what about a railroad bridge? That's what I'm building. The time will be 1959 - 1960.

What's in a name? Or, Name that Railroad!
What would you call a model railroad that depicts, or tries to, the B&O/Chessie Western Division, Cincinnati Subdivision, and the Penn Central Southwest Division, particularly the 26 miles from just West of Cincinnati to Aurora, Indiana along the Ohio River?
No joke names poking fun at Penn Central either, I know you were thinking about it!
