The "Inverted Amherst 2005" worth pursuing?
I've been playing around with SCARM and trying to figure out what direction I want to take my eventual layout when it comes time to permanently fix it to the board.
This is my current, temporary set up:
Originally I intended to get a second powerpack and train to run on the inner line and call it quits. But forget that! I'm hooked and want a permanent layout. I'd rather forgo the second power pack and train and save up for the DCC System. In the meantime, I thought I'd pick up the Kato V7 set to add to my layout to utilize all the track I own.

Assistance needed for plan improvement
All:
I am asking for assistance in improving upon the following track plan I have chosen. It is 2' X 8'. I will have an L-shaped area to fit it into, giving me 9 linear feet total, 3' on the left, 6' straight. (The first 3 feet of the plan will be bent to the left, leaving the remaining 6 feet as is).
Question about Layout Design Assessment Formulas and Helixes
I have a single track mainline that uses a helix to connect the lower level to the middle level. The helix is a double track and I plan to use the outside helix track for upward bound traffic and the inner track for downward traffic. It will also function as a (VERY LONG) passing track. The helix is 4 times longer than the 'normal' passing tracks.

Logging switching module
I am starting to design a switching shelf layout for my West Side Lumber Shays. I have a spot in my garage that is 16 feet long and 3 to 4 feet wide. I am re-using some old frames, I have two modules that are 3x6 feet and one is 4x4 feet.
On the left I was going to have a small saw mill and pond, in the center a small yard and in the back a logging camp on the upper right.
The nice thing about shays is that they run real slow, so it makes the layout appear bigger than it is.
Thoughts? Suggestions?

Starting a layout design with the structures?
Has anyone developed a track plan specifically to feature structures?
There are several interesting buildings in the area. The local station is unique. Nearby not serviced by rail is a small, complicated rock crusher. Crossing a skewed Howe truss bridge, the next town over has an elaborate passenger station. A nearby city has a very tall cold storage building. Another town has a curved building served by a sharply curved spur.

Need asssistance in designing Shoo-fly Scene crossing a Creek
I would like to add a Shoo-fly track scene on my Interim P&A railroad. I have some questions before I make the final design.
I would like it to be an emergency replacement of a pile-trestle style bridge that was destroyed by a derailment and subsequent fire. The bridge replacing it will be of the same design. The Creek it is crossing is very shallow, but wide (approximately 150'-225' wide - i.e. 2'-3' scale feet wide).
New US Historical Map Tool
The USGS and esri have released a new map tool / site for finding and downloading US Historical maps. Finding relevant maps on this site is definitely simpler than using the search options on the Historical Maps site. Point, click and scroll operations allow one to find, identify (by date and scale) and display relevant maps.
Rethinking Staging
A layout design mantra has been staging, staging and more staging As I continue to change the railway from a freelance layout to a model of the British Columbia Railway Squamish subdivision I am rethinking this. The Squamish sub only saw 3 through freights in each direction and 2 passenger in each direction in the summer plus locals and pushers.
The north end of the modeled portion ends in the division point yard at Lillooet. Staging would be more realistic as part of the yard.
Google map trackplan
Hi all
I have seen pictures of people taking Google map screen shots and scaling them to ho or n adn printing them for use as a track plan.
Ive googled and searched several forums and can not find anything about this process. Any body have a link I can follow to find out more about this
