Creating a grade on foam
I previously posted a topic about my track plan for suggestions from experienced modelers and thanks to there input I have more or less finalized my plan. I intend to use cork roadbed on 2" foam sheets for the layout and I am wondering what is the best method for creating the grades I desire. I know Ken Patterson demonstrated a laser level and scraping tool but I am not sure I want to invest in a tool like that.
Roadbed width in SCARM
I've been trying out SCARM (latest version). While it does a decent job of displaying track (rails or sleepers or both) I have not found a view for roadbed in 2D mode. It does display roadbed in 3D mode.
Does anyone know what width they are using for the roadbed (for example, Midwest cork is 13/4 in wide, Homabed is 17/8 to 2 in wide)?
Also, is there a setting for seeing roadbed in 2D mode? (It's a feature I like in WinRail).

Need some help with track lengths!
Hello All,
Im just trying to figure out the lengths of track Ill need, for the plan I have attached.
It is just a portion of the whole room.
I just cant figure the lengths Ill need for the "drill (lead)", the "run around" and the "spur".
Branchline and Yards
I am researching prototype example of a yard located at the junction between the mainline and branchline. Most example I have seen, have the yard along the mainline and the branchline connection either before or after the yard.
I'm modeling CN in the late transition to late 70s, but the track arrangement could come from anywhere.

Track plan input
I am planning my model railroad on the Southern Pacific Coast Line 1946-1953 for the lower deck and Denver and Rio Grande Western 1930's for the upper deck. I would like some input from fellow modelers on my track plan.
Prototype suggestions based on a general track plan
Hi guys,
I have a space for a HO layout along two walls of a 9ft X 9ft room, 18" width. I really like Jack Hills, Newcastle Industrial track plan http://oscalewcor.blogspot.co.uk/2011/01/track-drawing.html but would like a prototype structure to follow for the main industry. If the team track and second industry can fit a prototype area all the better.
G Scale Narrow Gauge
I have had an idea that I am not sure if it can be done.If I understand it right, G Scale is 3/8" to the foot for "standard gauge"
So if that is right, the standard "O Scale" track in G Scale would be 10 8this of an inch, or 3'-4" reasonable dose to typical north America narrow gauge.
So one could use O Scale as a starting point and model a narrow gauge to standard gauge interchange.
This would allow for some pretty good detail.
Or am I missing something?

Drawing my track plan
Other than pencil and paper, what do you use to draw your track plan in digital format?
Thanks,
Mike
New to the forum - here's my track plan
Hi guys-
I am new here and wanted to share some things. I've been away from MRRing for more than 35 years, and more and more over the last few months, I've been getting the itch to re-enter the hobby. WOW! Lots of new stuff to learn, but more importantly, there are more resources (thank you, Internet...).

Control Panel Variations - Opinions?
I have two ideas for my "Tower" control panels. The first has just the tower name:
The second has both the tower name and milepost. I pretty sure I prefer this one:
What do you all think?
