Dream and design
The Bighorn Sub
Below is the plan for my Bighorn Sub, modeling the BNSF circa 2000 between Sheridan and Parkman, Wyoming. More to follow.
Eastern coal hauling short line concept
Lately I'm thinking about an idea I've had for some time and thought others might have some comments/advice so I decided to post my somewhat rambling thoughts.

Loads-in empties-out on a peninsula
I really wanted to recreate a local landmark, a gravel crusher, and I wanted it to function in a loads-in empties-out scene. My railroad space is tiny, point-to-point, and does not allow a long double-track design. So I headed over to the Micro Layouts site at carendt.com for creative small-space ideas.
The final design uses a sector plate, a section of track that pivots like a turntable On the left is the gravel pit. On the right is the gravel supply company unloading dock.
Temporary ballasting?
Not sure if I wrote about it, but I'm working on a temporary shelf switcher (about 13.5 ft X 1.5 ft), 1-inch foam on a couple hollow core doors, tacked to a ledger board with 2x3 "feet", until I can get started on a new layout room in my basement.
I am not caulking down any track or using roadbed - tracks sit on the foam. (Yes, I know all about the Holy Wars over foam, cork, Homasote, noise, yadda, yadda, yadda.)
Is it prototypical practice to pass industries?
Is it prototypical for a mixed consist train en route to a classification yard to pass customers that may be receiving some of those cars? Meaning would the railroad sort those cars for delivery in the yard first or would they know in advance that those cars need to be placed and just spot them where necessary? Here's why I ask:

Now on Facebook: Mr. DCC
Well, I've taken the Facebook plunge.
Once I got a personal account, I found that a stub had been built for Mr. DCC https://www.facebook.com/763811727097319
I've corrected it and fleshed it out a bit. I'm still getting into the swing of Facebook, so, some of my work may be archaic or bumbling. Bear with me.
Feel free to ask or discuss DCC questions there.
12" Lighted Valance over 26" Bench? Projecting light on uncovered areas.
Hi everyone,
I am looking at doing a valance over my shelf layout which is 26" wide, yet I was hoping to do a 12" "book shelf" lighted valance above. I feel that this would feel better aesthetically in the room it will be located in but was worried about fully lighting the 26" of layout. Has anyone done this? Is there a good way to reflect or project light out on to the uncovered space? I plan to use LED strip lighting on a dimmer. Below is a rough profile of what I hope to do.

Ideas in 4x8
I've been at this model railroading thing since I was 10 and I am nearly 50. In some ways I am still very much a newbie. I have been in and out of the hobby several times and I am trying to find my niche. I do like building structures and models in general. I don't find myself attracted to ultra detailed models. I admire those that do but I am very satisfied with a "good enough" approach to models. I do very much enjoy electronics (my previous vocation) and DCC is a ton of fun for me.
Under construction (forever busy)
So I am laying some track and gathering materials and supplies. Currently the railroad occupies 2 shelves. 30 inches by 9 feet and 24 inches by 12 feet. Both of those are homasote over plywood and cookie cutter with about half the track laid. My modeling partner in crime came over yesterday and we built the benchwork for a third section that is 14 inches by 10 feet. (the width could expand a bit) That is totally his own project. I will lay the track but he is going to design the scenes and structures. Backdrop and scenery is all going to be him.

REMINDER: Get your "One Module" challenge entry submitted!
We've received a number of "One Module" challenge entries - but the deadline of January 31 is fast approaching, so get your contest entry in!
Some of the submissions are excellent. Several reflect interesting and innovative thinking in module design and construction. I think you're going to enjoy our first "TOMA" layout design contest articles.
