Dream and design

Chicago South Side - CTA Elevated

Hi everyone,

for a model builder contest in Germany, I've built a small layout. It's N scale and measures only 18" x 7".

Tiadaghton Valley Railroad & Coal Company

I started this new topic as an off-shoot from my previous topic located at http://model-railroad-hobbyist.com/node/26350?page=2

I've been trying to come up with an idea, concept, and trackplan for a proto-freelanced layout for a 10'x12' (8'x12' useable due to a closet and a door/opening along the one wall) and I've finally come up wit a name for the railroad!

First steps on the San Jacinto

Eventually I'll launch a blog for this. But I've chosen Andy Sperandeo's San Jacinto District theme and track plan for the new layout. Been acquiring era-appropriate HO scale Santa Fe equipment. And, of course, I've turned my attention to planning and design.

As to the latter, I've enlisted the services of Byron Henderson's LayoutVision.

Lighting: What's your preference?

Right off the bat, let me say that I've built layouts in rooms with overhead incandescent or fluorescent lights, and I've built layouts using the "shadowbox" technique, with the lights hidden behind a valance. Both have their pros and cons.

For the new layout, I'm considering going back to overhead lighting, using T8 fluorescents, 5000K CRI. I'm figuring that for a layout room of 170 square feet (12-6 x 14-8) that seven to eight fixtures of two tubes each should work well with a layout height of 63 inches. It's cost effective and experience shows me that I should get good lighting.

My Second Layout: A Final Track Plan for Suggestions and Critique

Howdy y'all!

So, first off, thanks for all the input on my previous topic of "dense track vs. open look"  I think I needed to hear a lot about keeping things simple.  This will be my second serious attempt at a layout, but since I "arm chair" modeled all through high school and college, I think I have a tendency to want to bite off too much.  I posted a rough draft of the following track plan as a comment on that thread.  Here it is refined a bit.  I'd love any input before construction begins next week:

Layout Design

Earlier today, at work, as I was sitting in the seat of U.P. 1027 (GP-60) waiting for my turn to take a local train into the yard. I had time to draw some more track plans on the graph paper book I keep with me, I was looking at two of the Soo Line subdivisions I want to model, and bemoaning the fact that a double deck would be the only way to fit them in, and these two subdivisions would have the exact same foot print with one on top of the other.

Pricom at Indy?

Hey all,

am curious if anyone here attended Bob Scheffler's clinics on MIDI control of light and animation?  Also, was a video made at the clinics?  Any info is appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Jim

HO Scale track plan, opinions and ideas welcome.

I've gone from a big Christmas tree layout to a double deck with a two track helix and now to this single level semi-modular design.
