Using sectional/modular methods on a home layout (TOMA)

On another thread, there were some actual experience comments about trying to use modular/sectional methods to build a home layout. This is an approach we're calling TOMA - The One Module Approach.

Rather than hijack that other thread, I've moved that TOMA comment here into a new thread and I'd like to explore the topic with anyone who has actual experience trying to do TOMA-like methods for building a home layout.

The Whip City Railway

Evening all. Been awhile since I posted in here. Wanted to get some advice form the old heads so figured I'd post progress and plans in here. I'd appreciate any advice you folks can offer.  Below is a basic desription of what I have so far. Below that the track plan to date.

All the white will be more or less at one level. That may change as I modify things as we go.

Railroad Name Generator (manual edition)

The online railroad name generators do not fit my ideas of  proper USA railroad names. Here is a proposed rule set for generating fictitious RR names.  Insert your own place names and you are good to go.  A place name can be a city, state, river, mountain, or any geographic feature.

Suggestions are encouraged.

Read it like this: [required], (optional), and commas indicate choices

Russian narrow gauge logging line

Ever since the first TOMA competition I've started really thinking about building a layout that will fit the space I have in an easily demountable way. I have been reading through other track plan posts, but would appreciate some comment on my track plan below.

Layout planning--in need of thoughts and ideas

I hope to cut wood by the Autumnal Equinox, or by Samhain at the absolute latest; it’s time to get a railroad going.  (HO Scale)  As yet, I'm looking for thoughts and ideas on small layouts.

The available funds are limited, but a decent amount of material is on hand.  The available real estate is 6’ x 2’, the era is the late 1920’s…the place: Northern Maine.  There’s room for a small staging area at one end, snaking between the computer and the monitor.

(Small) British Outline Layout

Hi all,

Recently, while Googling small layouts for On30 ideas, I stumbled upon a layout sketch that really caught my attention.  It was of an HO 4x6 foot layout designed for the Thomas and Friends series ... distinctly British.

Fictional Heralds for Your Railroad

The name, the location and the story never was?  Bridge route between Comanche Springs(La Mesa), Pecos. and Victorio(Alpine). Connected the AT&SF, the T&P and the SP.

Port Deposit and the Low Grade

Hello all, I just joined this forum because my long term plans for my dream layout would be blasphemy on my current forum. I love N-scale, and I will keep modeling it, and always appreciate it. The modeling community is also great at nscale.net, and I will always be over there with our 160. But after numerous discussions and research, my plans are better in HO scale.
