Idiotic Idea in 10'x2'

If anyone has followed by blog they will see that I almost (!!) never get beyond track laying. The problem is that I am always short of space but get bored with just switching. Although I enjoy it, I also like to see trains run and I never have the room.

So, here is my question.

2x12 Free-mo Module

Designing my first Free-mo module that will also be used as my home layout. Looking for thoughts anyone has on the track plan. There will be tail tracks for the main line at either end of the module when operated at home.

HO

Equipment SW1200, SD40T-3, F7ABBA, 55' coal hoppers, 65' plastic pellet hoppers, 50' and 40' boxcars, 65' gons and coil gons, propane tank

Track is fastrack #6 and micro engineering

Seems I didn't label that one spur in the engine terminal area. This will be a caboose track.

Seen this a million times I'm sure...

I have part of a room that I am dedicating to my new layout. The area is 12'9" wide x 11' long. I will mostly be running 40' & 50' cars, but with some long locos such as an AC6000 and a Santa Fe 2-10-2 and once in awhile wells style cars behind the AC, all in HO. I am not looking for anything prototypically accurate. I just want to use this as a learning layout with some simple elevations, a little bit of scenery, mostly hills, trees with a few random buildings maybe try some water. More of a countryside look.

Tampa area Hobby Shops

So I am spending a few days in Tampa visiting relatives and was wondering if there are any good train stores in the area.

How many yard tracks do I need

Okay, I reached a point where I need to be pretty sure of my yard design so I can finish a short wall that is on one end of the yard. I am thinking one day we will expand thru that wall into portable staging yards. So I will cut the opening now. In trying to maintain a reasonable reach I am planning my yard 15 tracks deep. The back 6 are planned to be staging tracks. The first 9 are arriving, departing and sorting/storage tracks.

There will be an access area behind the staging tracks so we wouldn't have to reach across the entire yard if we needed access.

Does anyone have a copy of Rail3dxtraktor for XtrkCad files?

Hi Guys,

Looking for a file called "Rail3dxtraktor" used for converting XtrkCad files to Rails3D. Anyone know wher to find the file?

Track plan idea

I have brought this up before, and as a long time lurker have been watching to see if anyone else has thought of it. I have been enjoying the RichlawnII thread, as it is based on the same design I am attracted to, the Heart of Georgia.

Lance's Model Railroad Design “Best Practices”

Hi,

Lance posted some guidelines on his website today: http://shelflayouts.com/model-railroad-layout-design/design-best-practices/  Most look really good.  Just curious what others think about them, especially 30" radius being good enough for passenger cars.  Do your experiences agree with this (professional) suggestions?

Day tripping steam in the modern era

Well, this is rather more nerve-wracking than I thought it would be; posting the very early sketches of a chainsaw layout I'm considering at the moment.

What you see below represents the culmination of several weeks of sketching ideas and changing many things around and I feel quite close to what I'm aiming for now. My inspiration and reasoning for this layout is as follows:

Junction / Interchange

Hi @all,

For our fremo division, I want to build a module and need your help.

Please imagine: a double OR a single track main and a branch junction, with interchange between them, best in the south east.

Does somebody have a link to photographs, or a name with which I can make a research with google earth.

Thanks! smiley

Martin
