HOG Inspired

Inspired by the heart of Georgia, I've come up with this. Would appreciate comments and suggestions.

Sunset & North Eastern - Layout for discussion

I have drawn out what I am thinking of for my new S&NE layout. It is supposed to be 50's between Hartford CT and Boston MA - where the S&NE ran a more direct route.  The locos comprise an RS-3, an SW-7 and an F3 with a Budd RDC providing the passenger service. I have 24 freight cars.

To build a helix or buy a kit

Hey guys I am kinda up in the wind on whether I should build a N scale double track helix for a 2 level shelf layout or buy one of the kits off line and save me some time.  What do you guys think is the easier way to go?  I think it would cost about the same either way.  Just curious.

Plans Plans and more Plans

Enthused about operation but I have to make some hard choices. All the ideas I have will force me into an era and locale. Choosing industries forces choices of rolling stock. Right now I am all over the place with rolling stock and locos. Everything from an S2 to an AC4400. Rolling stock ranges from wooden truss rod cars to fairly modern rolling stock (1970s). I am thinking for pure operation I can have one set of locos and rolling stock that is era and industry appropriate and when I want to have fun, I can and run whatever, just to please myself. Is that cheating?

Track plan review help

I am trying to finalize the spur/service track plan for one area on my layout that is under construction. The area in question is the lower level around the center platform.  The single track mainline enters from the right side after exiting the loco service/yard area and then it proceeds around the center platform before passing through the backdrop (blue line) and entering the helix which takes it up to the middle level.

I have attached a diagram showing this area of the track plan.

Will any small layout owners please stand up?

Another thread raises the topic, "Do small (i.e. less than room filling, or LTRF) layouts get enough respect?" The OP there felt that the hobby would die unless the magazines gave more coverage to downsizing.

Track Plans

Does anyone here like to draw up track plans? I have bench work built. I just need a track plan for operations and a continuous loop. If anyone is interested I can supply accurate measurements.

Things I am looking for include

1) continuous loop

2) 3 or 4 track yard with diesel facilities (2-3 tracks)

4) double track main if radii will allow for it

5) switching opportunities for a lone wolf or 2 operators

6) scenic dividers (I plan on using photo backdrops)

Thanks in advance, Jeff
