First level critique from what I've learned

All,

Attached is a first level drawing. I have circled the radii of each turn. I opted for outside turns for 42 inch and inside 36. 42's would look better for long cars as seen on the outside and 36 on the inside would not look bad on from the inside. I also showed narrower/narrowest parts of isles dimension for those that have done it before to give advice if I need to widen these.

Supersize it?

Jim Six's recent thread has left me wondering how much railroad is enough. I'm looking for a new train room, er-- house, and of course I have dreams of grandeur. But Jim's experience (I am heading for the same thing), Michael Rose's recent rethinking the HO section of his empire, and many similar comments has me wondering what is realistic.

I'm back, well sort of

Hello folks,

New York Central railroad Falls Road as it appeared in the MID 1950's.

I am an older model railroader approaching retirement in 8 months.

I have been arm chairing for quite a few years. My last layout was in my teens

I grew up in North Tonawanda, NY but am currently living in Snohomish, WA.

Upon retirement I plan on building an accurate version of the New York Central railroad Falls Road as it appeared in the MID 1950's.

2 level mountain

Has anyone with a 2 level RR ever run a scenic element from the lower level through the upper level? I'm thinking a mountain with a tunnel on the lower level that would taper through the upper level so I can introduce a bridge to cross the mountain on the upper level. Blayne

Roque Bluff in O Scale p48

I would like to get the groups input on a plan that is based on Iain Rice's Roque Bluff.

stub end - back in passenger terminal

ive always been drawn to the design of the stub end terminal. im trying to incorporate one into my layout which is in benchwork phase. ive done some search on threads relating to this , but not too many results. is this typically something that people dont model due to the back-in element? is it looked at as disturbing the "flow" of train movement? i was going to do a pull through station with 6 tracks, but i keep going back to the stub end design. im looking at doing a three track mainline, and would have to allow for a 5 car (85') train length.

Radius of layout turns

Gents,

Now that I have found most of my trains are going to be about about 30 to 40 cars or about 30 foot long. I need some input on radius. My initial thoughts were for 36" but what is a reasonable radius without wasting space and realistic running???  Space is not so much an issue but lets face it, just because its there do i need to waste it too. So what will allow for long trains but also not waste basement either??

Can somebody take a look at this switching arrangement ...

First let me apologise for the poor quality of my diagram. I can't work out how to do straight lines on the drawing software I've got. Hopefully I can explain myself.

CAD Software

This may not be the forum but I thought I would turn to my model train community first. I am looking for some CAD software. I am adept at using computers. I cannot for the life of me figure out CAD software. I want to make some drawings for a structure I am building. I would like to draw a line with my mouse, then click on that line and adjust its properties. Line length etc... I want to be able to build on that line by adding more lines. I have no desire for 3D. I just want to make a simple line drawing. Is there anything like that out there? I want to work in real world dimensions.
