New ISE sound module

New ISE product – Soundbytes! Check out the new sound module offered by Iowa Scaled Engineering. A neat little unit for playing single sounds. I plan to use some for the crossing bell for my three grade crossings. They offer a number of prototype bell sounds which you can hear on their product page and they plan to release more sounds in the future.

Work train advice?

Hello

my name is General Greenstar

I lead the White Lion Railways, based in Columbus, Ohio.

I need some advice and/or ideas regarding an MOW train that would be built to help construct track in tunnels that are being built.  I’m planning out this train as a one that is involved in the construction of the Mount Moon Tunnel on the Jungle Subdivision in Africa.  Although the tunnel would never be completed.  Any ideas on train consist?

my railway is modeled in 1/87th scale

Weekly Photo Fun - Feb 7-13, 2021

It's another week . . . post 'em if you got 'em.  There were a few late-comers in last week's post.  Check them out, then come back here afterward.

Krylon?

I'm getting ready to paint a few train cars, and need spray primer.  My local Michael's doesn't have what I need, and I will not so much as set foot in Hobby Lobby, so my options are limited:

1.  Drive nearly an hour each way to a local hobby store with a good assortment of paints

2.  Order online--not a preferred choice

3.  Use Krylon or other Home Improvement store paint.

If I do go the online route, what are good places to get rattle cans?

A longtime Model Railroading friend makes last departure

I visited my LHS the other day to hear the owner had died after fighting Covid for about a month.  Patrons were encouraged for a while, as Jack seemed to be starting a  recovery, then, not.

How do you guys handle getting a consistent grade built......

.......when you are doing your bench work?  I understand how to determine the height-distance thing but getting my grades to be a CONSISTENT say 3% is very hit or miss when it comes to curved grades.  A straight grade is easy but when the tracks curve it gets hard.  Looking for tips.  I’m using 1/2” plywood with a layer of 1/2” Homasote on top as my roadbed which is about 4” wide for single track.

"Dues paid" Model Rail certificate

It's been mentioned a time or two, that "you've paid your dues" as a railroad modeler if you've tackled some project, even if it kicked your asterisk to the curb without breaking a sweat.  Two of these, I've had personal experience with, and I'm wondering what other lost cause I might have tried in the past to gain the coveted "Hat Trick".

My "Don Quixote" list so far includes:

The Front Range / McKean 60' Centerbeam Flat Car kit, an ongoing grind...

spiking Plier

OOPS I left out some text. I purchased these pliers from Fast Tracks a few years ago and I have used them but they are just to big, I use the pliers from Micro Mark. I was wondering if anybody else uses the Fast Track tool?
