Modeling general discussion

Obscure model review

Recently, as i said in some of my other forums, I got a few early era Bachmann Amtrak stuff (specifically a first iteration Metroliner and assorted Amfleets and a Metroliner dummy). I heard there was an MRR article in the 70s reviewing the Bachmann Metroliner, and the only information i know about it is that its strong at an 11 car pull, but thats kinda it. If anyone has a transcript and possible pictures they might’ve had it would help a bunch. It’s to help with my documentation of the prototype and the model to have a small little archive of the set as a whole.

Affinity Photo on sale agan

J C Shall just posted on the old Affinity Photo sale thread that the $25 sale price is back on again. These low prices have not lasted long in the past so here's another heads up........1-22-2021. Clocks ticking. I haven't found any info on ending date.

A roadside sign from a long time ago and a galaxy far, far away.

I have always loved the look of the various colorful large signs that use to be a part of every American city. Most of these have been replaced and scrapped, but a few have been saved. This sign for Manda an Lori’s Restaurant has seen better days and appears to be making way for new development.

Not sure what power adapter I need for a 1995 New Bright Musical Express. Help?

I bought a 1995 New Bright "Musical Express" set off of Ebay, thinking that it took four C batteries like my other New Bright set. This one, however, clearly needs an adapter. I'm just not sure which one to get. I see numerous new bright adapters on Ebay, but am not sure whether they're compatible. New Bright made so many "express" models, it's really hard tracking down the exact replacement parts.

Make your own cork roadbed and save......

.........enough money to buy a new locomotive!!  Here’s how.

Buy cork in a roll, 11 bucks.

Cut it to size on your miter saw. Cut right through the packaging and it will keep everything together.

How to choose sounds for my loco?

So just recently got back into the hobby and I purchased a DCC ready Alco 2-6-0 and a SoundTraxx TSU-1100. I got everything set up and it's working fine. I'm just wondering, how you figure out what sounds to use to get it as close to the prototype as possible? I'm trying to mimic a Mogul that was used on a branch line on the P&R/Reading. Thanks in advance.

windows for brass models

I have recently come into possession of some brass models, most of which do not have glazing on their windows. What is good material for glazing these? The models run the gamut from steam locos to diesels to passenger cars to cabeese. I seem to remember that years ago we used microscope slide glass. Is that still a thing?

I don't care about the collectability factor. These are intended to be operational models.

Prototypical horn signals on a short line?

I have tried searching on this topic within MRH, but haven't found an informative answer, so would appreciate some help.

On a shortline, when switching out industries, would the horn be used when moving off (forwards or reverse)? Or is everything done by radio between the engineer and the man on the ground throwing the switches?

Thanks

John

San Luis and Rio Grande Pictures

Hi Folks:

I am getting there on the tracklaying for my railroad, I am starting to look for references for colors of grass, trees etc around the area between LaVeta Pass and Monte Vista including the area around Alamosa. Unfortunately I'm not in a situation where I can travel right now, or I'd just go out there and burn up lots of electrons with digital phots.

Pantograph physics

One of my recent purchases in the hobby were some old Bachmann Amtrak equipment (Two Metroliners of different generations and two phase I Amfleets), and since I do plan on running the cars as a set, I wanted to get new pantographs (from the modern E60CH since it has the twin pantographs. Not prototypical for what its going on but im happy with my choices) and it put a question in my head. Do pantographs have a “correct” setup for running?
