Modeling general discussion

Short versus long class tracks

Hi all,

I'm considering a renovation for my classification yard, and I haven't seen much coverage in the yard design literature I know of about the following question. I'm curious what you all think:

For a classification yard on a fairly large model railroad, would you rather have a smallish number (say 5) full train-length class tracks, or double as many (say 10) class tracks which are half a train length?

Photo software edited pictures - Post them if you have them.

So, I recently picked up Luminar 4 Photo Editing Software that was posted here mainly because it was cheap ($25) but didn't think that I would really use it that much. But now I am really enjoying it. I will share a couple photos but would love to see how others have used any type of photo editing software as well.

This is only using the sky replacement tool.

ICE #67082

Hello everyone! Just wanted to share my latest model. I was unable to use Sergents because there are no long shanks available and that is very saddening. However, I did everything else I could to up the realism of this Atlas Trainman foobie. If anyone reading this has any long shank (or even double-shelf) Sergents you are willing to part with...PLEASE let me know.

Model Train Layout Lighting is Important - Monsterrailroad

Happy New Year fellas! I just wanted to give you an update and to revisit layout lighting. I am adding new lights to the layout so I can continue building the layout itself. I have stated in many past videos that layout lighting is very important and I continue to remind you of that today. You must plan for proper layout at the same time that you are planning Monster layout build in your basement, spare bedroom, garage or your bedroom! I am very excited to be back to building the SoCal Desert Rail Division II Railroad and to be making brand new videos again.

Decals

I am trying to make some decals.  Nothing fancy,  just some novelty and vanity names.  I've made them before using my inkjet printer and they came out pretty well.  But for some reason  I'm  having trouble now.  I have new decal  paper and it is made for an ink jet printer.  When the prints come out they  look great - very  sharp and neat.  But as i leave them to dry the color starts to bleed and they look blurry and are totally unusable.  Does anyone have advise?

Selectively Compressing a Mixed Freight?

My modular layout is finally getting large enough to put together an entire train.  Due to the available space, track plan, and budget I have decided on 16' for a maximum train length.  That works out to be about 2-3 locos, a caboose, and around 20 freight cars (maximum).  Last weekend I put together a 20 car train and ran it back and forth on the short stretch of main line and for some reason it didn't look right.
