Modeling general discussion

Weekly Photo Fun - May 2-8, 2021
It's another week . . . post 'em if you got 'em.
sludge pit
Hi All,
I am modeling the late steam era in the West. In referencing photos of engine servicing facilities I've noticed a few pits near the loco tracks that look like they are full of "sludge" or possibly old oil. Whatever it is its shiny thick liquid. Two questions: Anybody know what that is and I'm looking for ideas on what to use to model "goopy shiny" black stuff.
Thanks in advance

Planting a corn crop
I am planning on having a small corn field on my layout. I plan to use JTT ho scale summer corn stalks. I am trying to calculate how many corn stock that I will need. What is a good spacing that I should have between plants and how much spacing should I have between rows?
Prewired LED’s
I am not having any luck locating a source for prewired, 3mm red/green (bicolor) LEDs, preferably diffused (not water clear).
I know Evan Designs has them, but they are 4x more expensive than the LEDs I was able to purchase on EBay however, I can no longer find them on EBay
Anyone have a source they use?
Arduino Nano as a function of a decoder
So here’s a question:
I’m looking at trying to model modern HOlight rail.
I’m powering it with a Stanton drive.
I want to create changing destination light boards like you see on busses and transit trains.
So my idea was this:
Install an Arduino Nano with a tiny LCD screen made to look like a destination board. The sketch just displays destination info repeating or static not sure yet.
3 D Printer
I'm sure this question has been asked, I am however not able to find the thread. What is the best 3 D Printer to print small HO scale details, such ad BBQ's, trashcans, bird baths ETC?

Bangor & Aroostook anyone?
It struck me that BAR is a very nice candidae to model. A rather small compny in sceic surroundings with a very intersting roster ranging from old diesels from F3.s , BL2.s to early Geeps to a rather modern times all these mixed with a batch of new and used Gp38.s. ANyone out there modeeling this? As they had all 4 axle units in their later years, it is pretty interesting to model. Cheers!

KCS Layouts
Since Kansas City Southern has been in the news lately about a possible merger with either the Canadian Pacific or Canadian National, it made me wonder if there were any layouts built that primarily featured KCS.
Nothing came to mind, but I found a couple:
1. An excellent layout featuring the KCS 3rd Subdivision in Oklahoma set in 1982.
