Modeling general discussion

Airbrush a Athearn black plastic shell

My first delving into model railroading, at the moment just doing a static display model.

I've a Athearn FM Trainmaster. It's a black plastic undecorated kit that I am thinking of turning it into a SP Bloody Nose scheme unit.

Being black, I was wondering it it is advisable to put a white primer base on it before doing the Lark Gray/Scarlet Red coat.

I've never airbrushed before so I am not sure just how the coverage of MODELflex paint will be.

Thanks in advance for your knowledge.

Weekly Photo Fun - May 9-15, 2021

It's another week . . . post 'em if you got 'em.  There were a few late-comers in the week before last's post.  Check them out, then come back here afterward.

Feeder wire gauge

Hi all,

I’m at the point of soldering feeder wires.

I have a spool of 1000 feet of 24 gauge solid two wire telephone wire I picked up years ago on sale.  Good quality in two colours.

I’m not sure if that is too small.

my system is Digitrax and I’m planning to use 3-4 boosters in total the biggest being 5 amps.  They will be located around the layout and separated by gaps and isolated.  They will communicate using the Digitrax bus. Track is Peco code 83.

Railroads I Have Known and What I Chose

Another topic got me thinking, https://model-railroad-hobbyist.com/node/42632 . Most of us have attachments to multiple railroads, yet most of us choose one railroad, time, and place to model.

What railroads are you particularly fond of or have memories of and why did you pick to model what you model over other interesting choices?

I'll start.

Atlas Kato RS-3

I inherited two Atlas Kato RS-3 locos recently.  They were in great running shape but the shells needed some work. Stripping and repainting/decaling has them  looking quite good. But I have a small problem - there are no handrails. I have searched the internet.  On the Atlas and Kato websites they  list the parts as SOLD OUT - nothing on Ebay or other sales sites.

Does anyone have a clue as to where i can  find available handrails for this RS-3 model?

Glad for any help.

Am really enjoying this collection of industry articles.

I noticed it at Walmart the other night, so bought a copy.

It’s a new publication, a “Best Of” based on a collection of previously published articles plus some new tips and techniques (like putting a layer of tempered glass over the grid of a self healing cutting board when glueing parts so as to not wreck the board),

Lots of insight into the workings of these industries, flow of inputs and outputs, switching them, some track plans, etc.  A very useful reference book, IMHO.

What Railroad Do I Model?

I'm in a bind. The problem is, I can't decide what railroad to model. The Southern Ry. and the Bessemer & Lake Erie are high on my list, but I could also go for the PRR or the B&O.

Does anyone have advice on picking a railroad to model?

I appreciate any thoughts you might have.
