Modeling general discussion

LDE, Modules, and TOMA

I've read of confusion about the difference between Layout Design Elements, Modules, and TOMA in at least a couple of other topics.

To me, it's pretty simple.  Each refers to a different phase in the design and construction of your railroad.

Tubing bender

I recently read an article where a guy used 1/16 inch copper tubing to represent piping. Unfortunately he did not say what he used to bend the tubing, Amazon shows tubing benders down to 3/16 inch. Anyone here tried this?

Virtual Exhibitions

Here in the UK, there used to be one or more exhibitions almost every weekend of the year. Since Covid, a few clubs have ventured into the realms of 'virtual' exhibitions, which has also been happening in the US.

I was recently asked to create a short video of my layout for a virtual exhibition by the Risborough and District MRC. Their 'in real life' exhibition that I was supposed to attend having been cancelled.

Here is the video I created, which may be of interest. I am hoping to be able to attend real exhibitions again in the Autumn.

Lack of response from mfgrs

More and more I'm finding manufacturers don't respond to questions about their products. This has been something way before covid so that isn't a valid answer to me.

I have sent emails to several of them with no responses. Some even have the question sheet/page on their websites to fill out and send to them. I would think that would show a desire to answer product questions but even those fail to garner a return.

Weekly Photo Fun - Jun 6-12, 2021

It's another week . . . post 'em if you got 'em.

Joe, what do MRH readers like and want?

Joe,

In the topic on small layouts you mentioned that MRH readers tend not to like articles on operations. I certainly won't argue with you or anyone about that. However, that statement brings up a question.

What types of articles do MRH readers like?

Ground cover

Hi everyone,

I'm new to your forum and I'm new to modeling. I've been reading posts about applying static grass and several people mentioned applying ground foam first. What is ground foam? Is there another name for It? I tried searching Amazon for ground foam and got nowhere. I'm more into creating dioramas than model trains, but I thought this was a good place to start. I've watched a lot of YouTube videos on model building, but I haven't found much geared toward the beginners. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Bulkhead End Gondolas

I have alway thought that bulkhead end gondolas (with ends higher than sides) were very cool and added variety to a string of regular gondolas. I have over 400 HO freight cars on my roster but regretfully do not have any of these type cars. When did they start using these, were they in regular service or did they serve a single industry where a forward shifting heavy high load might be a regular problem? Did any model manufacturers make accurate HO models of these or do you just buy an add on casting to an existing model?
