Video of PN club

A video shot yesterday at the Providence Northern club. I just finished installing a TCS WOW sound  in my Westside Brute. I built a unique consist and ran it northbound . The 1985 era layout was taken back in time for a brief time

Weathered cars on the Hitop

After not posting in quite awhile, as I've been busy with family and recuperating from a work injury, here are some weathered cars I have done for use on the Hitop. Some of my work I have sold on EBay the past few months, and just sold the Chessie box shown below to a good friend in Ohio. The PRR car I just finished, after two weeks, and four types of weathering medium on the car. I recently started to weather cars on the side for either sale on EBay, or sale to friends. I eventually would like to do custom work for modelers to enjoy.

TOMA thoughts

 Some thoughts about TOMA:

1: A really neat concept for getting started and picking up on various techniques in design, construction, structures, scenery, and all the other learning curves.

2: One or two modules may get you started for industrial switching, but as soon as you decide you really do need a yard you will find yourself building three, four, or more Plywood Pacifics.

3: For a yard you will find track and turnout costs add up exponentially, and wiring will suddenly get way more involved.

2017 Road Trip, Day 4, Stop 2 - Ted & Penny Smith and their Freelance Soo Line & SP

July 15, day 4 of our Road Trip.

Second Stop: Ted & Penny Smith, Iowa City, IA.

On our way home from the barbecue we stopped to meet Ted and Penny Smith in Iowa City.

They have an elaborate Basement Empire inspired by memories of places they've been and people they know.

Milestone - JMRI controls complete

At the end of 2014 I returned to the hobby after a few decades of no railroad activity with the exception of reading magazines and "virtual" operations on the computer.

I built a small switching railroad with the purpose of learning about DCC, JMRI and a lot of the things that had changed since the early 1980s.

I started with DCC, added JMRI's Decoder Pro and Panel Pro.  Along the way to getting my own layout under control, I built the control systems for our local club and helped another friend build the panels for his empire.

Need help on animating this model. (Rotary Dumper)

Does anyone know how to make this model rotate using motors? All tricks will be used when I build my layout.

2017 Road Trip, Day 4, Stop 1 - The "A ModelersLife Podcast" BBQ in Rochelle IL

July 15, day 4 of our Road Trip.

First Stop: AML BBQ in Rochelle IL (Check out the AML PodCast on FaceBook and at amodelerslife.com)

This is it Folks, The Main Reason for the Trip, Today is the Day!

I'm a regular listener of Lionel Strang's AML podcast, and an active participant on the AML Podcast facebook page. I feel like I've gotten to know many of these people already and the opportunity to meet some of them in person was too hard for me to resist.

Alternative Rail Transportation

I received an email from a friend, Forrest Becht, this morning.  Forrest has done lots of rail photography over the years, and the email contained a half dozen images that he had captured during the time that he was the General Manager of the Louisiana and Delta Railroad.  Two of the photos caught my attention and, with Forrest's permission, I'm posting them here along with his captions for the pictures.

This is a rather unusual method of transporting rail traffic (see caption below photo):

Road trip

I'm on a work related trip that has taken me to eastern Quebec, almost as far as you can travel by road on the north side of the St. Lawrence River.  This trip I have brought some model railway kits and my portable workbench - a small two sided plastic box that I have supplies in for trips like this.  I'll have to see how I manage with the Tichy kits I brought along.

Something to keep busy with in the evenings
