2017 Road Trip, Day 3, Stop 1 - Scott Thornton and the IAIS Milan Branch

July 14, day 3 of our Road Trip.

First Stop: Scott Thornton and the IAIS Milan Branch (Visit Scott's BLOG on MRH)

On day 3 we loaded up early in the morning and headed south from Minneapolis. At around 10:30 AM we rolled up to Scott Thornton's home in Ames IA.

Track Cleaning - Iron

I thought I would add a car to my track cleaning MOW train.  Currently the train has 3 cars with fine emery pads that polish the rail and a trailing car that has a felt pad to wipe off any grit and/or dust.  The new car would pull in anything metal that may be hiding in the ties.  I simply glued a steel weigh to an old car frame then just stuck some of those “Rare Earth” magnets on the underside.

2017 Road Trip, Day 2, - Non train day - Como Park Zoo

July 13, Day 2 of our Road Trip.

Non Train Day: Como Park Zoo

This was intentionally a non train day, since the rest of the trip is going to be TRAIN PACKED. We started the day by visiting the Antique stores in Hopkins near our B&B. After that, it was off to the zoo. If you're ever in Minneapolis-St Paul, the Como Park Zoo is well worth visiting.

After 7 tries at a nice selfie, I gave up...

CY&P #1 joins the roster.

I've had an MDC boxcab laying around for many years.  I was going to re-motor it, but the chassis design was such a bear, I couldn't come up with a plan.  Quite some time ago I ran on to this article on how to use a Bachmann 44-ton chassis to accomplish this:

Not Much Pink Left.......

on this car, caught this one in the yard waiting for the steel gang to clear up. Took this pic for anybody looking to do some heavy duty weathering. Unfortunately I don't have a pic of the top of the car and I could only get this one side. It looks like IRC put out a model of this car but none available on e-bay right now. The newest paint on it looked to be the FURX reporting marks and even they look well weathered. The car was new in 2-80

2017 Road Trip, Day 1, Stop 2 - Meet Up in Minneapolis

July 12, It's still day 1 of our Road Trip.

Second Stop: Minneapolis Meet Up!

I put out the call on Facebook, the RailPro User Group, and MRH looking for any model railroaders in the Minneapolis area who might want to meet up. The response was very good and we had people from each of the groups represented at dinner.

Train crew sizes through the years and reason for change

With recent discussions of prototype operations I thought I would post a little information regarding crew sizes and the changes I saw through the years I worked for the railroad.

When I started railroading some years ago, we often had six man crews:
Conductor
Engineer
Head Brakeman
Flagman
Swing Brakeman
Fireman

Prototypical Operation Instruction

I have zero experience operating a model railroad much less the real thing. I am clueless ( just found out being a railfan has a name associated, " Foamer " ) and I need some sources for prototypical railroad operations. Would/could anyone direct me towards a book, video, a web site that I could delve into and try to educate myself? Many thanks in advance for any and all help.
