Using an iPad as a tool to check alignment of decals and such.
I just recently applied brass numerals and tiny decals to one side of a locos's cab.
I take photos just when the glue or decals are wet to double check.
The tiny decals I had to align by eye and keep double checking and adjusting them.
Canadian Pacific gondola weathering
Even the competition gets some attention on the odd occasion. I have been on a freight car weathering binge and the latest victims are my small fleet of CP gondolas.

Fleischmann N scale couple conversion help
My son has acquired this N scale Fleischmann locomotive.
which Microtrains coupler do we need to get to fit in the trucks to make this work?
Thanks,

Getting past clip type DCC decoder mounts.
This is a three step prep. When you want to convert from one style of decoder to another, this procedure might work well for you too.
A clip type decoder holder is a convenience for the locomotive manufacturer. The first thing I do is to cut the “ears” or clips off the decoder holder with a pair of flush cutters. Next I might file the cut area flat if I intend to use Walthers Goo, silicone gasket sealant or rubber cement to attach the new decoder that way.

Booster help
I have tried adding a DB150 to my layout to boost power to the 6 power districts I have. Here is some data to consider:
1. The boosted has its own power supply and is connected to my DCS 51 Zephyr via loco net cables which are correct.
2. Toggles on the booster are set correctly for my HO layout. The booster is connected to Track A and Track B correctly through PSX 1's for the West main and the Port area which are the two power districts it should control.

IAIS's 4th Sub - UP acquires the RI after all?
As I've mentioned in other posts, I'd been struggling a lot since our move over whether to backdate to the early 1980s or continue with the IAIS, and I've reached a decision that would allow me to potentially do both if the pull to backdate becomes too strong at some point. Since this rural line saw very few changes between the 1980 loss of the RI and my May 2005 era, I can move back-and-forth between eras by doing little more than swapping out equipment and vehicles. However, since I'm much more of a fan of the UP than I am of the RI, I decided that a sligh
Removing paint from plastic models
Don't ask how I discovered this, but it seems butyl cellosolve (an ingredient in Joe's acrylic paint thinner) makes a pretty good paint remover for plastic models. It seems to be as fast as Scalecoat II Wash Away but is less expensive and does not smell nearly as bad.
My question is: Is there a reason I SHOULDN'T use it.
Thanks!

Rapido taking reservations for H16-44s
Just wanted to throw out a quick heads up to anyone wanting models of the late series H16-44 FM diesel locomotives. Rapido is taking reservations to see if these will go into production. I have reserved some for myself at my local hobbyshop.....about 100 miles away.
The models look to be extremely well done detail wise with lots of road specific details. For anyone not familiar with the H16-44 in this version verses the excellent Atlas models, the Atlas models were the early type the models from Rapido are of the type that looks like short versions of the trainmaster.
