A different kind of interlocking system

Previously I have expressed concern about trains driving into the abyss when my drop bridge wasn't in place.  I prefer to have a physical barrier as this will stop a train dead in its tracks (pardon the pun) instead of an electrical solution, as much because I am not much of an electrician as anything else.  I expect my kids to be running trains occasionally so child proof is important as well.

Caboose Industries Ground Throws

I would like to know if the Caboose Industries ground throws in HO scale works to operate the O Scale Fastrack turnouts?

Old buildings with grain of wheat and 12V bus

I have a few older built-from-scratch buildings I'd like to incorporate on my layout. They have grain of rice/wheat bulbs in them.

Since my new layout is DCC and I have buses running underneath, I have an accessories bus that is hooked up to a regulated 12V wall wart. Small things like building lights and effects boards run off this bus. These things are LED-based. These items have controls in them to take care of power, whether regulators, diodes, resistors, etc.

Using LEDS on control board for turn outs

I am looking to find out how to wire LEDS to my control board, and turnout signals. I model HO scale. I am building a free lance layout based on the steam era. I have taken an Atlas track plan from their book and expanded on it. I use Peco 3 wire twin coil turnout motors and switches. I have found much information on this, but don't understand most of the termonology used in the information. I am planning on using a Capacitor Discharge Power Supply, that I am putting together from a web site. I have chosen to use momentary toggle switches.

Garden Railways... In winter!?

Everyone with a garden railway has to put up with winter. Some suspend operations untill spring. But what if you want to plow that snow and keep the trains running? What sort of equipment does one use? Should it be commercial, or home made? Will it work? How much snow can it handle?

Circus comes to town

Circus comes to town

Come on, everyone loves the circus right ? After watching Ken Patterson's videos I started thinking about scenery and photography differently. I also make videos, not as good as Ken's but I try my best.

The Gauntlet

An interesting article in my latest issue of the Nickel Plate Road Magazine on Interlocking Rules showed a sidebar piece that included a diagram. Part of that diagram showed a bridge/gauntlet arrangement with an interlocking tower on the approach.

This brought up several questions in my mind. Does anyone make a gauntlet track? (I run Code 83) Can one be made using a combination of flex/straight/switch frogs without having to have an engineering degree? Does anyone have one on their layout and experience in this type of trackwork?

Scale of Trees to Trains

I saw this picture today posted on my Facebook feed by a BNSF engineer friend.

That's a lot of coverage there...

Modeling wise, you barely even need a backdrop minus a panorama of trees from floor to ceiling...
