Pokey Progress: Main Deck Benchwork

On my last layout post I showed the helices leading up to the main deck and some initial main deck frame work going in. I just completed the main deck and am now ready to start laying some track, so I thought I'd post a few more pictures for the benefit of those who have been interested in following the construction progress.

"Boulder Ridge" Free-moN Module (2'x6')

So it begins.

Never built a layout, never even ran an engine on a layout. Don't know a whole lot about nothing and much about some.

After several years of reading, searching and nail biting for the opportunity to have my own fairytale world where I could manipulate the caricatures and play God in sculpting a perfect landscape, I hit paydirt; N scale Free-moN.

Old School build

Hello everybody. Have been a member for a while but am just now posting. A little background about myself. I have been seriously model railroading since about 1974 or 1975, and on my second layout. My first layout was poorly designed and in a limited space. I used it to learn techniques and to get trains running, but it had no operational opportunities. I have spent the past three years getting the basement train room finished, bench work built, track laid and some basic scenery land forms done. I finally decided to take a break and do a little modeling.

Cool Tool!

FastCap has a new tape measure that makes squaring up benchwork and fitting braces for shelf brackets a snap! It's called a SquareOne tape... and it automatically calculates the distance of the hypotenuse of a right triangle. So... it you measure out from a corner of your benchwork, say 17", make a mark, then measure out the other direction, mark it, and lay the tape between the marks... you read the other edge of the tape and if it shows 17", your corner is square! Goodbye  Pythagorean Theorem!

Favorite switch machine (or special mounting technique) for shallow benchwork

A portion of my layout is going to have fairly shallow benchwork, shallow enough that the standard method of mounting a Tortoise won't conceal them completely.  What alternatives, either machine of choice or mounting technique, would folks recommend?

Removing Woodland Scenics dry transfers

Hi all.

I need to remove a Woodland Scenics dry transfer from the side of a car. There's no clear coat applied, but I'm not sure how to remove it. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know.

Setting Car Brakes

Not all my track work is completely level, when spotting a car, how do people "set the brakes" to keep them from rolling away?

Thanks,

Steve

BL-2 Running Lights

I've been working getting my HO BL-2 running lights working, and thanks to some help on the board, I think I've got it figured out.  However someone mentioned that it would be non-prototypical for the BL-2 to run with all four lights lit at the same time (one on each corner).  I assumed that the first generation diesels would run with all four lit, instead of the two forward lit when moving forward, and the two rear lit when moving in reverse.  Does anyone have any information on this?

Somewhere Southwest

"Somewhere Southwest" is a switching layout in H0-scale. It is located where it's hot&dry - in the southwest of the United States.

Richawn RR V2 - Landscape pictures under my new LED lighting

I just installed one of the four LED lighting strips on my layout as mentioned in my thread ( http://model-railroad-hobbyist.com/node/21248 ) and took a few shots under the new lighting.  To my eye the colors look more pleasing and the details seem to show better than under my old halogen lighting.  If you are using a computer you can click on the image to get a larger view.
