Rant about "bait" topic titles
As long as people are posting rant topics, I'll post a rant of mine. It's a rant about what I refer to as "bait' topic titles.
Recent examples:
"I thought we were a hobby of ..."
"How many times?"
I refer to topic titles like these as bait or hook titles because they are incomplete and essentially force the reader to go in and read to find out what the title hides, or doesn't reveal.

Digging through "old" photos - "pretty shades of rust"
Good afternoon all,
I was going through some "old" ( 2009 ) images that were taken while on a historical group's safari. These images were taken while watching a crew operate a remote engine to switch cuts of gondolas. The unused (and VERY rusty) track on the right hand side of this picture and other details were a pleasant discovery when viewed afterwards!

Gorrilla Glue Commercial
This is awesome, when is the last time you've seen a model train layout on a national TV add? Makes ya wonder if somebody in the GG company has a model railroad and said hey, let's do this add..... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yfl0q92sD_g
Sorry, don't know how to post the vid...…..

Time Table Planner
I have added a downloadable copy of my timetable planner MS Excel spreadsheet to my web page.
If you want to create your own timetable, you can enter a start time for each train, the running time between stations and the dwell time at each station and the spreadsheet will automatically generate a schedule.

I thought we were a hobby of... (Rule 1: it's my layout, Rule 2:see Rule 1)
"It's your layout, do what you want"?
I have a proto-freelanced layout that I'm slowing building. I keep at it and don't care if the magazines or surveys or anything else agrees with my layout. So long as the supplies I need from the hobby manufacturers, the hardware stores, and places like Amazon, ebay, and Shapeways (to name a very few number of places) keep supplying what I need, that's all I need.
Popularity by Region
Strength and health of the hobby, or lack of, is a very popular subject on this site.
One area connected to these discussions I have not come across is how the hobby is doing by region. For example, based purely on obsevation, it seems like north central and northeast regions of the country have a strong model railroad following and support structure, (Hobby shops, clubs, shows, Etc. ), compared to say the south central region.
Other "outside corner" layouts like Keith Jordan's The Patch?
I'm a mini-layout fan, but Keith Jordan's The Patch is the only small layout I know that solves the problem of taking the whole thing in at a glance.
On Keith's layout, someone switching the yard and freight house can't see the industries because they are around the corner. They could be miles away from each other.
Spouses and Model Railroading
I can’t believe it. Last Thursday night, after 15 years of being married, I asked my recently retired wife if she’d like to “help on an arts and crafts project on the layout”. After a moment’s hesitation, to my surprise, she said, “sure, why not?” Well, my intitial idea was to build some trees with her, but the next thing I knew she had completely rearranged my town (for the better!), and then dug into trees with a vengence!
Proto:87 animated switch stand mechanism
I’ve been experimenting with animated switch stands ever since reading Trevor Marshall’s fantastic article in the August 2014 MRH.
