I am Dismantling the HO Monsterrailroad UP layout for a new Monster chapter!!

So the time has finally come!  I have begun the process of dismantling my SoCal Desert Rail Division layout for my move into a new home in June.  I have recorded a video series of the progress as well.  It will be a 5 part series and I have completed 3 so far. I will NOT be taking the layout benchwork with me so that will be available for free to anyone willing to come to Norwich, CT 06360.  If you are interested just message me and we can make arrangements.

power prices

well in trying to buy a replacement dc power supply, (my old unit is ???)  i can not believe the prices, for such a simple device.

just need a cheap one for working and testing some dc locos. as they have been in storage for a long time, so need to check them out and have proof they work right before trying to turn any of them them into dcc controlled units.

might as time allows check the second hand shops. (no reason to drop the coin ---aka dollars---) in fuel and time here.

Two model ship suitable for N scale but also in HO

Fri, 2019-04-12 00:38 — Marc

These two ship models are excellent start to be kitbashed.

The Meng model is a magnificient kit at a scale of 1/150 suitable for HO and course better to N scale.

The cargo is the old "Shell Welder" of FROG; find on eBay and reoffer by a russian plastic model firm.

The Meng model is offer in a beautiful box and the instruction are offered in a real small book.

Grout as ballast? (Grout for dirt roads & parking lots)

I saw a tip on a model railroad mailing list about using sanded grout as ballast. The stuff is available from Home Depot at $15.50 for a 25-lb bag and comes in 40 colors. This is the stuff that comes in powder in bags, like dry cement, not the pre-mixed stuff in plastic buckets.

I think the idea was to buy two or three colors and mix them to achieve a speckled appearance, or at least that's an option if a single color won't look varied enough. You'd end up with quite a lot of ballast that way!

Rant on all things scale.

I’d like to preface this by saying that I am no self proclaimed expert on anything anywhere. There is a pet peeve that I have that I just can’t seem to shake. It seems that we, as scale modelers, make exceptions and do things just good enough to pass on one level or another. I have seen so very many amazing and unbelievable works of art as far as layouts and scale trains go, but there is always something missing in some respects. I want to pose a challenge to those of you out there to do yourselves a favor. TREAT EVERYTHING THAT YOU ARE MODELING AS WHAT IT IS. A MODEL!!!

A Question of Decals (Tichy decal opinions?)

Greetings. I’m wondering if anyone has used any of the recently-produced Tichy decals? I’ve built several Tichy cars but never used their decals, and the only reference I’ve run across is from the 1980’s which claimed they were somewhat blurry. I’ve always been impressed with all the Tichy goods I’ve purchased so I’m skeptical about that fairly ancient observation.

Weathering a steam loco

I'd like to make this loco, which I've had for ages,

look like this (pretty much what it would look like for the era I model)

It is hard to tell what the faded and weathered colours are on this loco, as it seems to be lit by a warm sunset.

Arizona Rock & Mineral Co.

Has anyone used their products.

I've been to their site, but they do not have a way to contact them i.e., email address or phone.

I need to know what size coal I need to order for a HO scale tender load and coal hopper load.

Also any suggestions on what to use to depict slate gravel.

Portable Double Helix

At the NE-IA Train Show this weekend, this fellow had his portable double helix on display. It breaks down into pieces that fit into a relatively small box for transport.    No fasteners.  The parts are all friction fit.
