Modeling general discussion

smokestack smoke

I'm looking for an article about using an aromatic diffuser to create real smokestack smoke. I know that one exists because I had it (and lost it).

No Waybills

Over on a early railroad operations forum, there was a discussion about "slow railroading", modeling the inefficiency and congestion of early railroads brought on by poor communication and no/low per diem.

Rod Stewart tells the UK about his hobby

It is well known in the US that singer, Rod Stewart, is an avid Model Railroader and his layout has appeared in US magazines. However, until now, he has kept it pretty quiet in the UK.

In the summer, on a major BBC magazine type programme, he did mention that now he had finally completed his layout in L.A. he could get back to making music. The presenters were not overly kind to him, and gave him a toy train set. This sort of derision is probably the reason he had previously decided "I don't want to talk about it" *.

Testors Glosscote Application - 1161X

Hi everyone,

I am looking to apply Testors Glosscote with my airbrush to a few freight cars. I was unable to find directions though. Can someone help answer the following questions:

Airbrush Air Pressure?

Thinner Options?

Thinner Ratios?

Airbrush Cleanup?

Thanks ahead of time.

Turnout installation

Hi, I am laying 2 turnouts on my double main oriented frog to frog so that I may change from one track to the other. I haven't decided whether to install power routing or live turnouts, but when I do, do both the straight and diverging tracks need gaps in the rails or just the diverging route. It's not making sense to me.

Thanks,
Chuck

Switching Passenger station on siding?

As I continue to work on the Seabrook NH to Hampton Falls stretch, something curious occurred to me.  Using period photos, I have definitely confirmed that the passenger station is next to a siding and not the mainline, but that siding also has a spur off it which appears to have been a team track, so the siding definitely has to be used to switch that track.

Custom Photo Etching Vendors

Hi Folks:

I am looking forward in the planning for my railroad, I'd like to get photo etched parts for my N-scale western signals.  Similar to these.

I have the ability to make the masks for the photo etching, I am wondering if there are vendors who will custom etch stuff for you for reasonable prices, also, I'm curious what is the proper material and thickness.

Who do you recommend?

Ideas on dealing with dust on the layout.

Yesterday when Michael Rose and his bride were at our home to enjoy a smoked Boston butt roast he wanted to peak in on my layout.  He noticed the dust as did I when I was taking roof top photos for another thread. Michael suggested asking you guys how you deal with dust. My layout room is inside of the house and I have a HEPA fan / filter running all of the time; however, I still get dust.
