Good morning from Raleigh, NC - Sipping & Switching Society of NC layout

Good morning all!

About 40 members of the Sipping and Switching Society of North Carolina, Ohio Valley Sipping and Switching Society, Wilmington Model RR, Speed-Mo, and Free-mo modular groups got together yesterday to fill a void.

RGBW LED

Has anyone used rgbw LED ambient lighting for their layout and if so, what type? All of the lower end tape lighting is low lumen output. You can get higher lumen stuff, but you move up to construction grade and the price goes way up. I really want to do a day night cycle for operations, but want some dramatic effects during dawn and dusk periods.

Railfest 2019 any announcements?

Is anyone covering Railfest 2019 this year?

Some manufactures are supposed to be making announcements.

Tangent Scale Model just announced a tank car, for example. A 1957 GATC 8000 gal welded general service tank car in two decorated versions and undec RTR and undec kits.

Joe Fugate: Heavier than lead car weighting?

Joe,

That's a great idea! I had previously used a mixture of white glue and tungsten powder but the white glue sort of defeated the purpose. Thanks for the great suggestion.  But two questions arise?

What type of plaster did you use for your comparison of density of the mixture?  Is Hydrocal (remember that name?) significantly heavier than plaster of Paris?  Which did you use and should I be concerned about that choice?

Keep up the great work!

Matt

Designing Open Grid Sub Road Curves Bed Using 1 X 3 Lumber

I am currently designing a section of benchwork that requires open grid design, I need to design a 36” radius curve. A club member informed me that an article out of an old issue of Railroad Model Craftsman magazine outlined all the angles used to create curves using pieces of 1 X 3 lumber. Basically cutting a series of trapezoids with different angles and mending them together. All of this as an alternative to cutting curves out of plywood with a saber saw.  Has anyone ever heard of this article?

Kalmbach's Dream-Plan-Build DVD series

I recently bought a large number of Kalmbach's Dream-Plan-Build DVD series. Aside from the 19 volumes marked by number, does anyone have a list of which DVDs were released and in which order? I kind of want to watch them in order of release and I also want to see if I have all of them. There is nothing on the web (Kalmbach's site or in general) that list the titles or release order... Any help is appreciated.

International Railfair Nov 9th-10th Roseville Ca.

So, doing a little advertising for this, because Model Railroaders are like old wives clubs sometimes and rumors were flying that the show wasn't happening. This show is definitely on this weekend. At the Placer County Fairgrounds in Roseville Ca.

2 big things this year is that

1:the show will have clinics this year. Something that it hasn't had since I think 2000 or so.

LED wiring question

I was wondering if it would be possible to power small LEDs using DCC track voltage. I wanted to use the DCC track bus wiring to power a Tomar dwarf signal that contains small LED lighting.
