Layout design

Opinions Please: Better to go through a scene twice or hide the train once around the room?

My staging yard is directly behind the main yard of my layout.  This makes the yard look larger and is the best use of the space I have.  In order to make the layout seem larger, I am planning on running the train around the room one time and pretending the town is a different town (i.e. having one physical location on the layout be multiple locations along the right of way).  Am I asking for trouble, or is this a good way to lengthen the layout?

The Augusta Railway - Deep South Modeling in Utah

I'm living in Utah now and miss my home in the South.  So I thought I'd model August, Georgia in the 110 degree summer heat, along with a little humidity, just so that I don't get homesick.

The Cornhill & Atherton Railroad begins

The Cornhill and Atherton is born……..

Christmas seems to be the time that I make most progress, so the chainsaw layout has been chain sawed and I finally make a start on the main event. Although I now have a dedicated railroad room it’s only 11 x 8   (space is at a premium in the UK). So after months of investigation and thought I settled on a 2 deck arrangement linked with a helix.

The Great 2012 Layout Design Contest Is Now Over!

Well, "Great" may be overstating it just a touch, but it is what it is.  As those that have been following my pitiful blog over the last few weeks know, I have decided to switch from N scale to HO scale for two main reasons:  I've been collecting as much or more HO stuff (that mostly isn't available in N) which has created a divide in my hobby allowance forcing me to put off doing stuff on my N scale layout.  I felt more I needed to pick one and go with it, and the availability of stuff I want in HO wins hands down.

2013 Goals for your Railroad Modeling?

In December 2011 Rick Wade started a thread on goals for 2012. http://model-railroad-hobbyist.com/node/6579

I thought it would be interesting to review my goals and see what I accomplished toward those goals. And also look at what I had done that wasn't included in my goals.

Desert Grande Part 6: We're Running on Rails!

I am quite happy to report that at this very moment, my test train has successfully run a couple laps on my layout, thus it now RUNS!
