Cubicle Access? Train? ... Trains!

I have been silent, but here continues the expansion of my cubicle railroad.  At first I didn't want to block access to my cube, but now I just want my trains to go around! Sure, the shelf can lift up, but its too much work, so it is a duck under to get into my cube.

Any use for drywall in layout construction?

I saw a photo recently in the MRH forums recently that had included what looked like drywall as sub roadbed. I'm not sure that this is a good idea, but seeing it got me to thinking... I am currently building a new house and I have lots of drywall cuttoffs waiting to go to the dump.

Can anyone suggest *any* good use for this material in layout construction before I just throw it out?

The Cenrail Illinois Railroad

Hello to everyone here at Model Railroad hobbyist. Always a visitor and never a member till now.

My first post is about my fictional railroad that, ironically shares the same name as a real railroad, that I didn't know about until recently.

My n scale railroad is the Central Illinois Railroad, based in Evans (ghost town), Illinois. Its locomotive fleet consist of:

Rock Island, 4-8-4, 5113

CNW, 4-6-0, 237

2 unlettered 2-8-0s

1 undecorated 0-8-0

2 undecorated Dash 9s

My Central Illinois Railroad Industries

With my locomotive close to being completed, I already decided and will have a few great industries that real railroads service: quarry, brick factory, concrete plant, brewery, steel mill, lumber company, a scrap yard, and a charcoal factory.

In terms of importance, steel mill, the quarry, scrap (scraps go to the steel mill), brick plant, concrete plant, lumber company, and charcoal company.

I do have a few names for some of the industris:

Coldington Steel

founded in 1872, open at current location in 1925

Paper Dolls Double Slip Switches and Crossovers

6 tracks in the Station. Double main heading out of town.  Double main heading down into staging representing places far-far-away. and two tracks leading to maintenance, refueling and possible storage of passenger equipment.  I also wanted no less than #8 turnouts so passenger trains would roll easy pushed in, or pulled out.

Templot2 : Free?

Hi Guys,

My first post.  It seems that Martin Wynne's Templot is now for free.  When I tried to download I got a file called "attachments.php"  about 5Mbytes that wouldn't open.  What gives?

Pics of Layout (In Progress)

Here are some picturess of my layout. Your comments are welcomed, but understand that I am not a purist nor a rivet counter. Nonetheless, I was wondering do others use "manual dispatching" relative to switches and signals on a DCC system like I do? My switches are 2 pole 6 ways that let me select which aspect I need. Secondly, my ballast looks much better in person than in the pictures. It is a cheap and neat way to do it, with paint. Also as you will notice I am much farther along on the area that has trees and grass. Pics to follow.    Kyle

L.E.D.s for building lighting?

I am considering using LEDs to light my structures, off of the dc side of a standard powerpack of ~14v. (I use DCC for track). I am curious of what color leds work well for you. Regular yellow ones from Radio Shack don't appear to produce a pleasing color, although I have not actually put one in a building yet. If anyone has been down this road, and can point me to a source and also what resistor you used, I would appreciate the advice.

Thanks, Kyle
