Layout design
Nice Problem To Have
Somewhat of a newbie here.
I spent the last 4 months designing my layout in Anyrail. I've started my benchwork.
My original train room was only 10' X 12', so I designed a 4' X 8' layout. Kinda tight, but enough room to walk around 3 sides.
The problem:
Why Masonite
Why is Masonite used for the backdrop? I purchased a few sheets and installed a couple around my peninsulas but I'm thinking that it is a mistake. It would seem to me that sheetrock will work just as well and I can hide the seams easier/better using joint compound. Just looking for some input before I go and screw it all up.
Thanks,
Rob Teed
Trying to design a new layout
My room for modeling the railroad is only 9' by 11'6" and has two doorways both swinging into the room. So I decided I would run the trains up around the ceiling above the door level.
Track planning on iPad?
Does anyone know if there are any track/layout planning apps for the iPad?
Interview With Dave Primeau: Modeling the Prototype Railroad
Dave is from Ottawa Ontario. He and I got together to discuss prototype modeling. His Conn River Line is a fine example of how you can take a point in time in history and replicate it in an HO Scale Model Railroad. We did a six part series where a number of subjects were addressed and it provides a great overview of what to consider when modeling and operating a prototype.

Unconventional Lift-up
To bridge the gap across my cubicle entrance, I have used an unconventional lift-up design. An entire section of the layout lifts up and over. Not as useful as I would have liked, but a good learning project.

Some visualisation and a mishap
I asked my friend Matthias Hacker, to draw a sketch for my Ullapool station, for a better visualisation.
Here is the result.
During the tracklaying I missed to drill a hole in one of the throwbars of one turnout.
Prototype as a basis for freelancing
I was viewing this interesting Cleveland area roundhouse on Google Maps (found at 41.474953,-81.675571) and wonder about two things - perhaps someone can assist. Who operates it? It appears to be the remnant of a much larger one. History? Would seem to be tailor made for inclusion on several era layouts. Second, what is the neighboring industry that interconnects several large buildings with a long pipe system. Again, more to consider as a basis for a proto-based freelance operation.
Blue flag (light) protection
I decided to put some blue lights on the shop tracks for blue flag protection. They turned out ultra bright, not because of the resistor used, but that's the kind of led's that they are. I may tame them down at some point, but not today. Kyle
