Prototype Railroading

Prototype Photographs 2019

Hi All,

Went to see some trains today with my camera.  Found a couple scenes that you might enjoy looking at.

In the spirit of the holidays I'd like to share them with You.

Hope the year is Happy, Healthful and Prosperous for you.

I’m looking forward to see your prototype photos too!

impact of St Lawrence Seaway on railroads

The 1959 opening of the St Lawrence Seaway had a profound impact on railroads and communities in the USA and Canada. It reduced export traffic that formerly went by rail to Atlantic ports, significantly weakening rail carriers that served New York harbor, Baltimore and Philadelphia. This was a factor in the bankruptcies that led to Conrail. In Canada, it reduced rail traffic to the Maritimes.

Anyone have any information on the M&I?

The MIssouri and Illinois Railroad was created in 1921 and ran from Salem, IL to Bismark, MO. It was a MP subsidiary.  My interest in it is that it ran through Centralia, IL (the town I model) on IC tracks.  I have found the information I need to schedule the trains through Centralia, but I'm in the dark about power.  I've located photos of two different RS3s.  Does anyone have access to an M&I roster for 1955?  Would MOPAC power have been used?

MOW train on the UP in Slidell, LA

Here are some MOW cars encounted on the UP in Slidell, LA  (That's Louisiana for you northerners)

The group of cars and the NS converted Pullman were an awesome find for a northerner.

Hope you can get some good out of the pictures, posted in the first comment below.

I’ll take a walk now and see what I missed......

Photo collection to post. Best way?

Hi, I’ve just taken about 20 pictures of a MOW train. I found it very interesting. I’d like to share it but don’t necessarily want to put up 20+ pictures. Is there a better way?  I’m using an iPad.

Bush 4141 Funeral Engine

4141 has left Omaha.  A UP employee commented that it was headed for the Chicago area for viewing, but not much has been released.  It's speculated that it's going to be moved around the system so that UP employees can view it and the casket car.

I don't know if it's going to be available for general public viewing, or just UP employees.  I suppose if it's public, there will be some sort of local announcement.  If it's just employees, I would guess it'll just quietly be moved around.

Via Rail Cross Canada

Folks,

My wife and I are going on a cruise from Montreal around to the east coast and on down to the Caribbean next fall, and are contemplating taking Via Rail from Vancouver to Montreal.  Well, I guess to Toronto, from what I can figure out, then change trains to Montreal.

Anybody out there made this trip, and if so, can you please comment?  We plan on getting a sleeper room or similar.

Thanks,

Al Carter

Skaneateles Short Line Railroad

Some time ago, there was brief mention of the Skaneateles Short Line Railroad in central New York State. I recently purchased a book with a map and many photographs of this rural railroad. The book, by Richard F. Palmer, is published by the Central New York Chapter, NRHS and is titled "Short Lines of Central New York." and can be ordered online:

Stewart, Minnesota, Circa 1930

My wife's grandfather was a photographer by trade, in the small town of Stewart, MN.  We have lots of photos he took, and I wanted to share a selection of railroad-related ones.  I have included several shots of the depot and trains, as well as some of the construction of US Highway 212.  I have many more, but at the request of the extended family, I will limit the posting to these.

Curry Rail Services

A very interesting railroad industry. They built the TP56/70 and do other railroad related builds. Would make for an interesting module to build.
