Found out about this now - it's kind of old news (last year), but worth sharing.

(Real) Railroad Photography

I received a newsletter from B&H Photo today and it had a link to an article titled 15 Tips for Better Train and Railway Photos.  Naturally I had to check it out.  It's not an all inclusive tutorial on shooting train photos, but it does have a few good tips.  But most enjoyable to me were the photographs embedded within the article, shot both in the US and the UK.  Thought I'd pass it on.

Rail Grinding Train

I live next  the old IC (now CN) mainline.  It's cool and raining today, I'm sitting at my desk reading this month's Running Extra when I heard a very loud slow moving train go by.  Got up an looked out the window but I couldn't see a lot as the leaves are on the trees between the house and the tracks.  Got in the truck and headed down to the crossing just south of town to wait for it.

It was a Loram rail grinding train.  This would be an interesting model and fun to automate with lights to simulate the sparks. Not my era though.

MINIWORLD ROTTERDAM LAYOUT VISIT

A trip to The Netherlands visiting the spring flower expo's (read Tulips) and a stop at Mini World in Rotterdam.

A most enjoyable layout. Well build and operated. Lots of details and a typical 'Holland' scene.

Enjoy the photo's.

Train speeds and views.

On a German ICE train between Hamburg and Munich I was impressed with the speed we were going on the ground.  I know there are faster trains.  This is by far the fastest I have ever ridden.  The ride was very smooth and quiet as well.  Here are a few pictures from the trip.

172 mph!!!

Railroading “was” People

Was going to post this as a reply under another post but decided this would be an interesting subject to discuss.

”What happened to the everyday public face of railroading?”

Not too many years ago rail-fans could easily interact with train crews and other employees along the line.  “I still remember as a kid in the 70s, seeing dad many times walk-up to a stopped locomotive to talk to the crew and ask about trains scheduled to pass.

One dead on IAIS Iowa City

It happened about a block away from where I was sitting in my truck for lunch (smoke) brake, shortly after 7:00 am this morning. The horn was excessively long, and I thought "hmmm" then the long sickening brake squeals.  I looked at my wife and said "This ain't good." At 10:15 as we were leaving work and crossing the tracks we saw this-
