What makes a good post? I am not exactly sure. Many of mine are somewhat self-indulgent. I see something I want to investigate and I write about it. ...
Abandoned Lines and Cyclepaths in the UK
The Guardian carried an article on 31st August 2019 about old rail routes being used as cycleways. It suggested the 10 best routes where old railway formations are in use as cycleways. Theirs is not the only list of routes which seeks to provide a "Top Ten."
I have pulled together a few examples in the linked post below. I'd like to add at least one which does not feature in the top ten lists, and that is the Forest of Dean.

The Tanat Valley Light Railway in Wales
In August 2019 my wife and I belatedly celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary by having a few days away. We chose to stay West of Llanymynech in the Welsh Borders.
While we were there we travelled the length of the Tanat Valley, following as closely as we could the route of the old Light Railway.
Much of the time on the journey we were looking across a couple of fields and noting a slight rise in the land along the line of the old railway!
The Flam Railway in Norway
I have been reading through a number of old copies of 'The Railway Magazine'. Most of the magazines are from 1950. I found an article about the Flam railway in Norway and thought that members of the forum might be interested.
It was the plan of the 'spiral at the head of the valley that grabbed my attention.

The Forest of Dean in the UK
My wife and I enjoy an annual holiday in the Forest of Dean. We have been there almost every year since the year 2000. During that time we have enjoyed exploring a number of the different railway routes in the forest and have begun to realise just how complex a network of tramways supported the standard vague railways which themselves had replaced much earlier tramways. I hope this thread will be of interest to some.
School me on SP water cars.......
I understand the concept of SP's water car operations but I am looking for a little perspective of the behind the scenes stuff. I'm guessing they would be filled in a similar fashion as the old water tenders for steam and not off garden hose off the yard office, would the road crew have to grab a couple of cars before the getting the rest of the train, etc? Thanks for any insight
Steve
