Prototype Railroading

Prototype Railroad Forum

And here we now have a forum for Prototype Railroading... this isn't meant to be exclusive to the rivet counters, but as a place where all can learn and pass on information on prototype practices.

I have a question for the Rails here. What is a C&SI electrician?

Norfolk Southern has a job listed. They are very vague about the description of the job.

Why Their are 'Foreign Flag' Locos on our Local Flag Tracks

I thought this was an interesting video that explained the 'intermixing' of various flag locos on various companies' tracks,..

Engaging a Prototype Steam Locomotive Booster Engine

Hi,

Can someone explain the actual use of a steam loco, equipped with a booster engine (typically in the trailing truck or in the lead tender truck)? Were there separate controls for the booster? When was the booster engaged? Did the associated driven wheels often slip or drag relative to the drivers? Was the booster cut out when not needed? When/if cut out were the booster wheels free rolling?

If you have a reference dealing with booster operation or you know the answers, both would be appreciated.

Ditch light timeline

We got some excellent information in the rail car storage thread so here's scouting for more insight this time on ditch lights.

I can find that they became mandatory in the US as of 31 December 1997, and that there was much earlier use of some kind of ditch lights in the Canadian mountain west by CP and CN; but I did not find any sort of conversion timeline by railroad.

Car Storage

I've seen some cuts of cars parked along short line railroad sidings and even main lines for weeks or months without being moved, and I'm assuming (yeah) that these cars are being stored for a fee. None have reporting marks for the road they are stored on. I've also seen some that were there for weeks and then one day they were gone.

Track Vacuum

The Cumberland Mine Railroad is anisolated line that runs between their coal mine and an unloading spot to transfer the coal into barges.  A railroad that hauls only coal and lots of it has problems with coal dust, and spillage especially around the unloader.  What I didn’t know until I saw this video is how they deal with it so they can keep the track maintained properly.

Requesting Engineer's Thoughts

Several MRH-ers have operated a variety of diesel locomotives as can be seen from these prototype threads. Some are still doing so and some have even run old iron horses.

Of those you've operated which ones come to mind as your preferred (or disliked) ride?

What engine do you like for over the road? Switching duties?

What qualities make for the one you like and/or the one you don't care for as much?

Second category of "I know an engineer and he once remarked..." included.

MEC history lesson needed

greetings and I am hopeful that this request is placed in the right area.

Railway lines in ancient Egypt

The first railway in Africa and the Middle East was established in Egypt in 1834, where it was created under Khedive  Abbas I. Some time after its inception, the political situation in Egypt deteriorated. Then Al Khedive wanted to complete the work, making a deal with a foreign company, and also asking Robert Stievens, the son of the steam - powered train creator, to help him with this huge project, which will undoubtedly be a huge outcry in the entire Middle East.
