Modeling Interchanges Using Protoype Practices

I have talked a little bit about some of the types of interchanges I have managed in the past and I though I would go a bit more in depths into this interchanges. These interchanges on the smaller side and would be good for most medium to small layouts or as an alternate interchange for a larger layout.

RR Communication in the 70s

How did crews communicate with the dispatcher and tower operators in the seventies?

How did a yard switcher talk to a dispatcher?

What did railroad communication look like in the seventies?

Thanks!

A customer has ordered a car, now what??

Continuation of the thread I started regarding building jobs around customers needs. In this part I will be talking about once a car is ordered how does the crew know where to actually spot it.
Not every customer served everyday

Different days different work, thoughts on rail served customers

One thing I have noticed about some model railroad operations is that jobs are expected to switch every customer every session. I was recently going back through some old information from my Trainmaster and AGM days on a few railroads. One of the things I was placed in charge of was creating job duty and customer switching plans. My decisions were based on a number of factors, so if you are interested in how some schedules are made keep reading.

Small Short Lines

Or should I say, short short lines?

So what is the smallest short line railroad you know of?

Im talking actual railroad, has to have a reporting mark.

handling a local?

If a local pulls out of a yard, bound to serve a number of sidings heading out from its base and then returning, how is this handled? In my imagination the power leads the train normally, switches the sidings ... and then, absent any convenient way to turn the loco, the power runs around the train and pulls it, backing, to its home base? In the particular case I'm wondering about, the locals would work as much as 15-20 miles from home and return, rather than running the ~60-80 miles to the next division point.

Torpedo Bottle Car Unloading?

Can someone show me an image of the unloading of a torpedo bottle car at an electric arc furnace?

I've looked at MANY images and not found one. I inquired on the steel mill forums and was told that those bottle cars rotated over to unload their contents, but I have found it difficult to find images.

Did Walthers suppose that those bottle cars could be utilized with their electric arc furnace model?
