Wye Not?

CN, CP, BNSF and Skytrain converge at the Wye at Sapperton Channel, New Westminster, BC.  Many more photos and details in the thread below.  Re-arranged this thread so it's not so long as the opener.

Railcar Truck Set Nomenclature

I have been tuning up my freight cars in accordance with the "Make it Run Like a Dream" series, and got some good information about wheels, trucks, suspension, etc. on the MRH rolling stock forum.

I also found this video clip that does a good job showing the real thing. Possibly overly long and overly simplified for many readers here but it's worth a skim.

Question about state bans of 4-wheel 'bobber' cabooses

I'm looking for information about where and when four-wheeled "bobber" cabooses were outlawed. From what I've read Ohio and Minnesota passed laws in 1913 and 1911 respectively that took effect in 1919, similar regulation took effect in New York in 1924, and I've found a source citing similar legislation in Montana being enacted in 1907 but with no effective date listed.

Transfer Run's between Yards in Pittsburgh, PA Circa 1953

A short time ago, we discussed the interchange of cars between the proto-freelanced P&A and the NYCS at the north end of the P&A.  In Pittsburgh, the situation is slightly different as the yards are very close together, and the tracks connecting them are not a "mainline".  The primary Railroads interchanging cars with each other are the P&A, P&LE, PRR and B&O.  The P&A and PRR connect directly to each other, the P&A connects to the B&O and P&LE via the Pittsburgh Jct RR trackage.  So unlike the interchange at the north end of

Need further help understanding Coal Hopper Car Movements Circa 1953

Circa 1953, for the movement of coal from Mine to destinations that used large amounts of it, such as Coke Plants (either as independent operations or as part of an Integrated Steel Mill) I have a few questions.

What is this prototype track arrangement for?

As I'm from the Midwest, I'm very used to seeing loops for grain and coal loading and unloading. But this arrangement is outside of Lordsburg, New Mexico. Anyone have any clues what this might be used for? Google Earth shows four UP GE's, a bunch of tankers, some (I think?) ore or ballast cars, and a fair number of boxcars.

Histories of European railways

I'm looking to learn more about the history of railroads in Europe, especially England/UK, France and Germany. Period from the dawn of railways (presumably 19th century) to roughly 1950.

Where should I be looking? I prefer books over videos.

I guess I should mention that I'm fluent in English, marginally competent in French, and utterly illiterate in German.

Baltimore, coal & steel & railroading

Lots of railroading around Baltimore, the birth place of American railroading. I happen to have chosen it as one of my major town destinations on my new layout. And I spend a lot of time passing thru this town when I was living in DC & Annapolis over the years. It was also a place where my father first took me to a great club layout located in the downtown area.

Seaboard System vs Southern Railway

I’ve been gaining an interest an appreciation for some of the SE US railways as of late.  Unfortunately, this region seems to be under-represented in the railroad press.
