Central Illinois Railfanning?

I am preparing for a road trip from Indiana to Verona, WI. I plan on going I-74 West to I-39 North

Of course, I am going this way because I plan on stopping in Rochelle.

What are some other can't miss opportunities along this route? OR is there a better route that will offer railfan opportunities?

What happened to railroading? (a lot of the prototype has gone away)

So, it is with trepidation I post this question. A good answer is important to my modeling as I am finding myself less and less of a modern modeler, opting for models more from the 70s and 80s, maybe even earlier. A time when railroads really were something and even at that time they were a shadow of what they used to be.

Interesting work train - the fire train

Saw this from the Delta Fire in Shasta Co.  Not your normal water cars in action.

stacking contaniers

i have not been able to find any rule on why some 40 ft containers are only one high, even in a well car.

tried looking under dot, and icc rules. even tried looking for the rail roads rules.

where should i be looking? what language (aka loaded products that is) should i be using?

Not sure if it's been mentioned yet but just over a month till we see the big boy running (I think)

Union Pacific recently put out this update: https://www.up.com/media/releases/190314-big-boy-schedule.htm talking about this years early steam schedule. I'm not fully sure based on wording but this will be an impressive site anyone here planning on making a trip?

Shipping Empty Cans

Back in the 70's I worked for a Can manufacturing plant.  They were very busy and produced several different sizes and types of empty cans.  The cans were shipped by both rail and truck.

Soda and Beer cans were produced in large numbers.  A production line would make several hundred per minute, with the cans being automatically palletized.  These were loaded with forklift trucks.

Can You Buy Your Own Train? Here’s What It Takes - CityLab article

https://www.citylab.com/transportation/2019/03/private-rail-car-fan-owners-amtrak-cuts-trains-are-cool/584971/

I read this article and thought it was amusing. Although I doubt I would ever own rail cars and travel like this, but who knows...there's always the lottery.

H&H Ship Photos

The Hagley Museum and Library has recently digitized some of the photos from the Harlan & Hollingsworth collection, H&H was a ship (and passenger car) builder in Wilmington, DE and was served by the P&R/RDG, PRR and B&O.  It later became part of Bethlehem Steel Shipbuilding.

The collection has numerous pictures (an other info) on ships and barges of all kinds built by H&H.
