C&O RSD5 - Long or Short hood Forward?
Dear C&O fans,
Hopefully a quick one, which significant hours online searching has not yet definitively answered....
For the C&O 905X series Alco RSD5,
and the C&O EMD GP9,
Did C&O consider the Short or the Long hood to be the Front?

DPU's on the Norfolk Southern Pittsburgh Line
I am sure this is old news, Norfolk Southern is now using DPUs on the Pittsburgh line.
Makes you wonder how much longer the extremely active helper service based out of Cresson, PA will be around???

Sanborn Maps
Although this is from a genealogy post of Feb 4, 2019, the Sanborn Maps are a huge help to us. Library of Congress now has 25,000 available with a total of 500,000 to be up in 3 years. Here is an article outlining its use.

restoration of an old RR sign
Is there anything that can be done to restore an old RR sign?
A while back, I was given some crossbucks which the reflective coating was almost completely gone. I decided it was a little too rough to keep and gave it away.
Jump Frog / Lift Frog
I came across an interesting prototype tidbit this morning - apparently on high speed lines on some turnouts to seldom used tracks some railroads install a “jump frog”. It basically half a frog - the high speed route gets continuous unbroken rail and a very smooth ride, the diverging route gets lifted up and over the high speed rail and a bit of a bumpy ride. A really cool web video - all about the narrow gauge
I found this new video just posted on the Nat Geo Youtube website. Its all about the narrow gauge and its preservation. I just wish the video was longer, it is so well done. Enjoy Russ

How, talk about lucky, over 7 trains in just over 2 hours on a Sunday afternoon!
I went to chase trains on the main line at Tenino, WA and right away caught a train on the Puget Sound & Pacific line (with a GP-9, but going a direction I’d never get ahead of it, so I let it go).
After about 20 minutes waiting in Tenino on the main line, I saw a southbound Amtrak, and a Northbound Freight just a couple of minutes later (I missed seeing a ‘running meet’ with two moving trains passing each other, but about a mile).
N de M steam locomotives
I'm working on a decal set for N de M steam locomotives. I am trying to decipher the markings on the cab below the number.
In the picture, on the cab below the number, we have:
