Prototype Railroading

Union Railroad Sand Filler Dimensions

I'm looking for someone who might have the dimensions of the Union Railroad's sand filler extensions that are used on their MP15DC's.

ARM-DAT Inc - an interesting industry to model

A post on the OpSig mailing list led me to a set of live RailCams in the West Bottoms area of Kansas City, practically on the Kansas/Missouri border.

You can see the cams here:

Modeling from videos

I don't know how many modelers use youtube to get modeling info but the modern eras guys can learn a lot about trains from watching video. My fav is Stobe the hobo who sadly was killed about a year ago but left and interesting record of the trains and railroad towns in many parts of the country. Great views of rolling stock in operation and trackside scenery from the point of view of the trains. I wish the transition era riders had this modern video equipment so there would have been more stuff from that era....DaveB

Neat Loads

A couple of pictures of a Train I had to wait for yesterday. Sorry for the poor quality the pictures were taken from my vehicle.

A Useful Colorado Narrow Gauge Reference

Shorpy.com has recently run a stack of pictures from Russell Lee, including many showing the area served by the Colorado narrow gauge.

I don't know if these images are generally well known or whether they have been published before, but you can see them here (amongst a few other subjects, scroll down a bit for the train stuff).

The First Railroad Depot on the Hudson River

Who built it? "The New Jersey Railroad and Transportation Company".

Who were they?  The third railroad to be charted by the state of New Jersey. This charter allowed them to build a railroad from the Shore of the Hudson River to New Brunswick.

Time span that this terminal existed and was operational? 1834 to 1857.

Lincoln's funeral car

Knott's Berry Farm Railroad

I put this in my blog, but I think I want to put it here as well...

This is the Knott's Berry Farm Railroad...

This guy does a lot of videos about theme park history, and was recently doing a video on Knott's Berry Farm (check his Youtube for more on Knott's if you're interested)

He's a bit excitable, of course (like taking a kid to a theme park for the first time) While he was doing his video, he got invited by Knott's to come in the following day to do a show all about their steam engines.

C&O Greenbrier branch circa late 1950s : Railcar #9055 Ops question

Dear C&O Greenbrier Branch fans,

Ok, here's some for the brains trust:
- On the Greenbrier branch (Ronceverte to Durbin, via Cass), was Brill railcar 9055 _typically_ shuttled back/forth (and therefore did some running "tail first"),

OR

Was 9055 _strictly_ turned at each end of its return-runs (IE 9055 _always_ ran "head/cab first")?

- Was 9055 ever (however commonly or otherwise) run with a sister Brill coupled "tail to tail"? (IE run with "a cab at either end", thus avoiding any need to be turned?)
