844 accident

I was wondering what is now going to happen to steam trips after the accident that killed a woman standing to close to the tracks. Will this be the end of all trains rides because of insurance cost getting out of reach, like it is already, or will this be a wakeup call to make people stand away from the track, or now be run off because the railroads won't want anyone near the rails. Maybe fences will be put up to keep people away from the tracks, or police running you off or in worst case taking you to jail.

Fox River Trolley Museum needs funds to repair vandalized trolleys

The Fox River Trolley Museum (located in South Elgin, Illinos) has set up a GoFundMe page to raise funds to cover the cost of repairs to seven historic trolley cars that were vandalized early this month.  The damage, estimated to cost $100,000 to $150,000 to repair, was discovered by museum volunteers on the morning of Satuday, July 7.  South Elgin police have charged two youths, aged 11 and 13, with burglary and criminal damage to property in connection to this incident.

Norway

Took an amazing seven hour train ride from Bergen to Oslo up and over the mountains and past the glaciers and lakes. The ride was smooth, comfortable and scenic.

And along the way I spotted these cars. That pale greenish weather-beaten car in the background is a snowplow. And based on what I learned, there can be an awful lot of snow.

Red Devil Restored To Operational Candition

I just stumbled on this. Apparently, South African Railways #3450, the only class 26 4-8-4 (rebuilt from a non-condensing class 25) has been restored to operational condition. This is the famous “Red Devil” rebuilt by David Wardale according to the principles of L.D. Porta.

Note, the really interesting bits are toward the end with some pacing at speed.

Dodged it again

The copy of the latest tariffs on Chinese goods  reveals these new items -

4406.10.00 Railway or tramway sleepers (cross-ties) of wood, not impregnated

4406.90.00 Railway or tramway sleepers (cross-ties) of wood, impregnated

A word search of the document for - model - injection - mold - train - rail  turned up no hobby matches.
