Prototype Railroading

A brakeman on the Yosemite Valley Railrooad

Back in 1989, I interviewed Bob Lunoe who was a brakeman on the Yosemite Valley Railroad beginning in 1942 when has only 19 years old and decades later, still remembering “…every single day”. John Abatecola, who filmed and produced the YouTube video on my layout, has now put together a YouTube video using that interview and a lot of YV photos. It is at:

2010 car float.. up close

Have seen several posts about modeling old ferry/carfloat issues. Thought this video may help with some questions and also show how the movement of cuts of cars has evolved.  Video taken 2010 on the westcoast I think.

side note....there are several outstanding videos on youtube from the Conrail era on the eastcoast NY/Jersey carfloats/barges if you refine search terms.

Santa Fe Central Valley Division 1978

Recently I saw a video on Youtube about the Santa Fe Central Valley Division in 1978. Can someone point me in the right direction where i would be able to find information on railroading in this area during that era and the present day?

SHORT LINES

Do short lines get enough modeling attention? I am from the New England area, Just to name a few.. New England Central, Providence and Worcester, the big short lines,  then theres pioneer valley railroad, mass central, ct southern, etc and those are just CT and Mass (I know there are more) I occasionally see photos or blurbs on short lines, I dont have much square footage to model prototype large operations and it seems like thats all thats out there especially on line or in hobby shops.

SP Sugar Beet Gons

Hi All,

1. I have  two quick question concerning the loading of sugar beet cars on the SP during the 1968-1974 time period. Were the cars loaded in the fields on spurs, or were they trucked to a local pick area like grain is moved?

2. What would be a good SP gondola kit to start as a kitbash project for sugar beet traffic?

Thanks in advance,

Wilson

MBTA snow removal equipment

With another storm bearing down on the Northeast, I thought I'd share a link to some neat snow removal stuff.

Repaint #325 Fundraiser

A bit off topic but the Minnesota Transportation Museum is looking for help to repaint its SDP40 back to Great Northern Big Sky Blue this year. This is one of the only SDP40s left in existence, it was the last working passenger locomotive on a Class I railroad, and any help in preserving this unit would be appreciated!

Here's to hoping that Athearn releases an SDP40 someday to follow up on their excellent SDP45s as well.

To James Six - Re your three recent threads

Mr. Six:

Hopefully none of us who have posted to any or all of your three recent threads have said or done something offensive which caused you to remove those most interesting and valuable threads.

If so, I apologize for any or all who have done so (especially if it was me) and humbly request that you restore or restart those for the enjoyment and benefit of the many folks who have been following them.

Chuck

Could this scene be prototypical?

Or is it more likely this old loco would have had a date with the scrapper's acetylene torch.
