Prototype Railroading

Microscale attention to detail

Sometimes we are pleasantly surprised. Several months ago, I ordered a Microscale decal set for Western Pacific cabooses, based on an illustration in their online catalog.

Imagine my dismay when a similar, but not identical sheet showed up missing the particular late-70s lettering I wanted. Oh well. I probably have the right lettering among my WP freight car stash.  But . . .

Madison IN. history info/shelf layout model idea

Hello all,

After moving into a new home and been given a large bonus room for my next layout from the Finance and Well Being Office...(my wife...) I started to look over layouts and track plans with grades. Bonus room has knee walls and I will probably have to do grades to get to my vision..... wondering about a branch line running over my head as I sit at workbench.  Long story short...I had to re-learn grades and how to build them.  Then I found these videos on youtube about a prototype shortline that had a major issue.

Prototypical use of Horns, Bells in the 80's-90's

I am trying to figure out the proper way to operate the bell and horn on my locomotive. My layout is a small switching layout on a shelf. I will probably have a grade crossing or two eventually, but I was more curious as to horn sequences when serving an industry as well as use of the bell. I cant seem to find the FRA regulations for the topic, and was wondering if anyone could provide some insight as to the prototypical operation of the bell and horn in the late 80's early 90'?

Thank you,

Illinois Railway Museum - Special Event Sunday, April 29, 2018

So, this coming weekend, Illinois Railway Museum is having a special, free celebration. I'm sure it will be packed with kids, but for free I can put up with it. Free admission, free train and trolley rides (electric only), but no food service available.

History: From the ARA to the ARA to the AAR

Just what or who merged joined with the ARA in 1919?  Enquiring minds want to know:)

I know that MCB and others merged / joined with the ARA in 1919 possibly as a reaction to USRA control.

edit:  See below post of news from 1919.  The American Railway Association became the American Railroad Association at the order of the USRA

I know this so far about the ARA and AAR:

Positioning passenger equipment

Would the steam generator car always be between the diesel and the train?

And could the baggage car be behind the passenger car?

What Font did the Southern Railway(Railroad?) use at the end?

I'm looking for information on what font style they used at or towards the end of the Southern  Railway.

PRR Training film

I found this to be some very interesting information...

Signals sent to the locomotive, and an early form of stopping a train if the engineer isn't paying close attention.

My apologies if this has been shared before.

Book suggestions

I would like to get your suggestions on railroad books. I am not looking for modeling books, but rather books about real railroads. I just finished "Railroads Across Northern America: An Illustrated History". It was ok, but rather shallow. What books have you enjoyed?

Thanks!
