Lucky idiot!

This guy was REALLY lucky:

Aerial Photo of Chicago - 1938

Here is an aerial photo of Chicago from 1938 showing the myriad yards and lines from about 500 north (Illinois St.) to 2400 south (24th St.) and from the lakefront to about 1000 west (Sangamon St.).

(provides another modeling subject, too)

A bit of prototype, a bit of history, a bit of us.

Probable train?

I'm just wrapping up a session on my layout.

This train consists of a reefer full of lobster and a stock car with sheep. Also an empty coal car and tank car.

Is this train in order so to speak?

Can a tank car be coupled to a caboose?

I read that livestock was usually at the front of the train; is this correct?

Australian train wreck

There was a rather huge train wreck in Australia yesterday. It seems the train stopped to check one of the wagons and the train left of its own accord. 268 wagons of iron  ore reached about 65 MPH before being derailed at a switch. Google Australian Train Wreck. I figure that Milt Spanton and SplitRock at least would be interested.

Australian ore train derailment

There was a runaway train in AU carrying iron ore...  remotely derailed and it tore up about a mile of track.

I'm sure it's of interest to  someone  here.

Hand signal question for the professional railroaders, signals are relative to...

At some op sessions, and especially at Live Steam op sessions, crews will use hand signals. I went back and reviewed the thread https://model-railroad-hobbyist.com/node/30560 for some answers, but have one more specific one.

When doing switching, particularly yard or industrial work where you are working from both ends of the loco, what are Forward and Backward given relative to?

Glass factory car load ratios (present day)

I’m trying to figure out the proper ratio of inbound cars at a glass factory.  I’ve been toying with having a glass factory on a layout for a long time, and I’m thinking it will be the focus first segment of my new switching layout.
