Modeling the Pre-Depression Years: 1900-1930

Let's talk about modeling in the years before the Great Depression. This blog is an open discussion to assist modelers in understanding prototype railroads and industries so we can better recreate these on our home layouts.

Added a USB charging port.

Building IC 3400

There are no prototypically correct HO scale plastic IC steam locomotive models for the period from about 1936 when the rebuilding program started in Paducah until the end of steam on the IC in 1960.  There are some brass models available on the secondary market.

Throttle holder

My latest project was a throttle holder made of hardboard, 1/4 x 1 1/4 lath, and 1/4 in square hard balsa.  It holds my NCE Cab04 and Cab06 radio throttles.  The bar along the front is a hanger to hold the throttle backs.  I take the batteries out between operating sessions and can hang the battery compartment cover on the front between sessions.  Still needs to be painted and will probably put some felt or foam rubber in the slots for cusioning.

Link is Google Maps location of old Cotton Belt Main ( I think) north of Waco near town of Bellmead, TX.

Interesting in that access is from east and the old main line is removed north and south of this location.

Helix Pieces have arrived.

As part of my new layout here in Emo, I decided to add a helix and create a double deck layout. As of yet I don’t have a workshop to do any specialized cutting so cutting helix sectors was on hold.

Fonda Johnstown & Gloversville

I had just purchased two of the new Atlas S2's in the FJ&G paint scheme, which I figured would be a natural paint scheme progression for my Moosehead Western. As I was beginning to remove the lettering and start the decaling process for the Moosehead, I decided to look into the FJ&G. Seems this is a fascinating short Short Line with a very rich history. Beautiful locomotives and the Brill Bullet Interurbans. 4-4-0 locomotives and small 0-8-0 and 0-6-0's that pulled their hearts out moving freight.
