Homasote Installation on the 8th Sub

I've been installing Homasote sheet for the 8th Subdivision's Junction City yard.  Instead of screws or white/yellow glue, I've used contact cement intended for such applications as countertop laminate and veneer:

A coat on both the Homasote and plywood is brushed on and allowed to set following the label recommendations.

22 Stories Up - Decision Point (1)

A continuation to the story following my progress of the Central Vermont RR's Barre Branch layout's construction.

This topic represents a major decision point in the construction due to an unexpected consideration.

The idea is to work up each module individually, putting down the roadbed, track, wiring, and turnout controls while the module rests in an easily workable state, and than join it to the next one once that is completed.

Railtown 1897 on short list to be closed :(

According to this posting on MyMotherlode the state of California is considering closing Railtown 1897 by July 2012.  It would be very unfortunate if this does occur as one of the last working roundhouses in north america will be closing as part of it, the only other I am aware of is over in Pensylvania and I heard something about it closing as well.

Richfield RailRunners

Hello All, Our 5th week of work and we ave about a 3rd of the layout up. Last week we built a 3 turn helix using spline roadbed. It looks GREAT and the trains move up and down perfectly. This week we are going to put electrical drops in and continue laying track.

The "Greater Nickel Plate" Lives!

Have finally begun to make progress on my layout. Am using luan sheathing for the backdrop (see photos) and have managed to get 80% of the work done. Table is 52 inches in height and 30 inches in depth. I've tried make the best use of the space available given furnaces; doors; laundry  and even electrical outlets. Hence, the layout consists of a point-to-point design with a small port area at one end.

Silver Valley RR

When my our Benjamin moved out there was another room in the basement. My wife told me, better a railroad than another storeroom. Well, the

Silver Valley RR

was born. The route from module to module.

Here's Extra 462 east on it's way from Fiddletown to Silver Creek.

Handling 90 Degree Corners...my Trials and Tribulations with Forced Perspective

With extra time on my hands I've been making progress on my railroad.  With my engine house progressing and my new lights installed I wanted to experiment with building flats and forced perspective.  I spent a couple of hours playing around with this today and I have to say it's the hardest aspect of the hobby I've encountered so far.

Alcove Expansion - Part 3: Curved tunnel portions

Now that the lower track mainline portion is nearly complete I need to complete the tunnel before starting on the upper mainline since it will cover the lower mainline for a distance.  I made the straight portion of the tunnel out of 1" foamboard but need a curved section on either end.  There are many ways to do this, but I decided that I would try a new (at least it's new to me) process that I thought up using mat board covered with plaster cloth.  You can see the process here: http://richlawnrailroad.com/?page_id=129<

Adding cars for the first time.

I now have all my track down, all of the switch machines in and tested, but I have no cars at any of my 16 visible industries. So how do I select the cars, the waybills and determine what trains go where. I have read just enough to convince me I do not know how to start. Here is my trackplan with information about each industry.

The JPG is not as sharp as I would like it. I printed the image and it is much more legible.

Roadbed

Got my subroadbed finished and have moved onto laying down my cork roadbed. I have laid out some track just to see how it will look, also the big white sheets are foundations for my depot and warehouse.

You can find more photos on my Oregon Trunk Website
